*insert standard-issue trolling of fears over Steam here*
It's interesting that there's no fears over, say, SecuROM in general and the online activation servers shutting down specifically.

Less of a userbase so the vocal minority is less. Of course people don't see the problem until GFWL eats your saves because the internet went out or the Tages activation servers go down for a few days leaving everyone without a game.

Honestly i would accept Starforce/SECUrom or any other combination of disk based DRM instead of even a single time online auth at install..
you can always clean your PC of the prior. Calling or using the internet to "auth" your software doesn't flow with me. Its like raising your hand in class to use the restroom, i will never again ask for permission to do what is a natural right i have. Likewise why should the users "ask" permission to install software they bought legally from a merchant?
I mean we don't call our car manufactures to start the engines of our cars do we? Onstar has that ability and there are some cell boxes that attach to your battery with remote kills but still most "new" cars bought are owned, they carry some insanely impressive very licensed tech, EG Mercedes benz has billions wrapped up in there nav software and the brain of there car yet they let you do what ever you want once the car is yours...

It's like saying "...why does nobody ever complained against Starforce..."
The reason Steam gets a lot more of it today is because most games are Steamworks games, pure and simple. I don't like ANY activation system, none what-so-ever. Steam is just the one I bitch about more often lately because it is the one I have to deal with more often lately. Also the fact that everyone seems a-okay with it for some reason is grating.
"I hated Starforce, TAGES and SecuROM but Steam's okay!"
"Why?"
"Well... it's Valve! And it's so convenient!"
