I see DOSBox has a version for MAC OS... curious if it works well? I'm not talking about using Parallels or any (other) virtual machine. Just wondering if DOSbox for Mac OS emulates DOS well enough to run old DOS games. We may get a Mac laptop and it would be fun to run old DOS games on it.

And while I'm on the topic, a search for the term "Mac" returns 0 topics... but I've seen several topics with Mac in the title, including one called "Steam Coming to the Mac?" Guess they're a little "sensitive" about the topic?

DOSBox on itself is already full system emulator so it has no problems on macs.

DOS games should run just fine in DOSBox with a few rare exceptions. So far all but one DOS game I've bought from GOG work great: Earthworm Jim 1&2, Master of Orion 2 (1 got some weird slow-down/pause issues), Descent 1&2, Master of Magic, The Settlers 2. You actually might want to check out Boxer. It creates self-contained wrappers for programs so you won't have to mess around with the command line at all.

I run Windows-based games with the help of Wine (Wineskin). As long as they're not demanding (titles from the last few years) most should run pretty well. Currently I have Stronghold, HoMM 3, and Prince of Persia running smoothly.

In any case, I actually would like to see more DOS era games on GOG. Not just because they typically are problem-free but also because there are a lot of excellent titles from that period.

just a warning though, the installers require windows, even if the games don't, so you will have to use Wine or some such program to extract the files from the installer.

Crossover games for mac is the solution for that problem.

It works quite well - in fact, it works exactly as it does on Windows and Linux, since the three versions are maintained in parallel. The only issue is having a GUI that makes setting it up and using it easy. I prefer Boxer, as someone else mentioned, though another favorite of mine is DBGL. - through DOSBox alone pretty much any game using DOSBox on GOG will work. There's a list of DOSBox games on GOG which you can look at, and of course, a GOGMix I've assembled myself, too. You can put the tinfoil hat away - a common limitation of most forum software is that it prevents or can't work with the use of search strings that have something like less than four of five characters (unless the admins have diddled with it to allow that); hence, "Mac" or "Mac OS X" won't work, but terms like MacBook or Boxer or CrossOver likely will.

On a related note... I recently saw somebody ported DOSBox to the iPad. And then... it got pulled (not surprising). I'd love to play MOM or MOO on a pad, dontcha know.
