I hope it's not too late to throw in my suggestion, even if the contest is already over.

As you mentioned you own a PS3, I highly recommend Heavy Rain, for three reasons.

1. This game works mainly on an emotional level. It's about interpersonal relations, the inner struggles and motives of the characters. A lot of people say it's more like watching a movie than playing a game, but that makes it even more accessible for newbies.

2. You can't lose. There is no game over, no right or wrong. Just this way or that way. It's all about decisions to make for the player. There are 16 different possible endings, based on how you react to given situations during the game.

3. The graphics are beautiful.

So go for Heavy Rain, you won't regret it.

A suggestion that has not been mentioned: Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 (on PC and other platforms). The protagonists are cute but mischievous creatures.
