You can still find cheap copies of Rune out there, and it runs perfectly on a modern OS. It's worth getting.
Rune Is a third person melee game. If you can remember the game Heavy Metal F.a.k.k. 2 , it plays quite similar to that except without guns, or if another idea is needed think of the lightsaber battles in jedi outcast/jedi academy. Its main focus was single player and while the story had a good setup the pacing hasn't always seemed right to me(although I would still like to get to the end eventually).

As for multiplayer, don't even bother unless you have Halls of Valhalla(or the gold edition). There is a fan made patch out that brings the game up to 1.08(and its even promoted-if not necessarily supported- on www.runegame.com. The patch is only compatible with a version with HOV(either separately or together as rune gold). Also I just checked(while writing this post) and there were about 50 mp servers. A couple of years ago when I was only using the base game(no XP) there were like 6 servers only 1 of which would have people. I couldn't tell if the servers I just pinged required HOV at first glance but a couple of years ago nearly all required it.

Sadly, at least for GOG, a couple of months back I finally bought the gold edition(I had the regular game for years) on Ebay for like 15 dollars as I got tired of waiting so even if it did show up on GOG I wouldn't buy it except for a really good sell(as a sort of backup).

Note: Halls of Valhalla the expansion is multiplayer only. It adds no single player content.

If you are interested in making the game look about as good as it can be you can get an great updated OpenGL renderer here: http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/ - version 1.5 if you look down passed the older ones. Although you will need to do some .ini tweaking as it adds a bunch of new settings: http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/settings.html
I liked Rune. It was nice to play a melee game where the controls were smooth, there was an overall Viking theme, nice graphics etc. The enemies got kind of repetitive but that did not stop me from finishing the game.

It's nothing like Gothic but it's a fun game in its own right.

Heretic777: This was one of those games that slipped under my radar back then for one reason or another. I'm thinking about picking up a used copy. Is it similar to Gothic1? If you've played this game, let me know what you think about it. Thanks.
I remember this game! I loved it! :D

It's nothing like Gothic. It's just an action game and is quite fun

My favourite bit is when you find Loki XD Still remember that scene to this day for some reason

I didn't realize this, good to know. Thanks.
