I figure we're all fans of old games here, and I'm trying to remember the name of a game I played in High School. Also, I'm hoping it's somewhere here on GOG. I didn't play it a whole lot, but I remember it being fun. Here's what I do remember about it:

I'd say it came out sometime in the early 90s. Probably '91 or '92. It was an RPG-type game set in ancient Rome. You started out as a slave ( I think) and the idea was to get out of whatever city you started in before a volcano destroyed the city. I remember you had to steal the clothes of a citizen to be allowed to leave the city. In fact, you stole his clothes while he was taking a bath in a bath house, I believe. Something like that, anyway. Once you got out of the city, you ended up in a larger city where you could buy gladiators and enter them into fights. I'm sure there was more to the game than this, but that's really all I can remember.

I get the weird feeling this is going to be a game that doesn't age well, but I remember liking it in High School. Anyone have any idea what game it is?
This probably isn't much help, but take a look at this site:
http://alexandria.rpgclassics.com/system.php?system=PC

That's a list of a lot of classic RPGs, the one you are looking for may (or may not) be on that list.

"Before a volcano destroyed the city" is most likely the city of Pompeii, which a volcano erupted upon and the city was destroyed and buried underneath the ash. I would assume this is the city the game would be set in.

Sorry that I wasn't much help, but hopefully it'll help you rediscover the game.
Sounds like Rome:Pathway to Power.
Sounds like Rome: Pathway to Power (1993 in the US). It had 6 "chapters" but the first one you start as a slave and have to advance to citizen before Mount Vesuvious erupts (that chapter is called "Herculaneum." Check it out on Wikipedia and see if that is the game you are remembering. On Moby Games there are some screen shots - it doesn't look bad.
I haven't checked if it's on GOG, but it looks like a good candidate, if they could get the rights to offer it.

Yes, it's definitely Rome: Pathway to Power. Doesn't seem to be on GOG, but maybe someday in the future. I don't think I got real far in it (I don't remember commanding armies in it, for instance) but I remember it being a lot of fun.

Thanks everyone!
