Smannesman: What about The Spirit Engine?
I seem to remember that being highly spoken of back in the day, there's also a sequel but that is not freeware.
The sequel, The Spirit Engine 2, has been a freeware for quite some time now.

And oddly enough is still being sold at GamersGate... I guess the idea is you can buy it if you want to support them.

If you go to the website you can clearly see it's not freeware.
I seem to remember it being free about a year ago, but apparently the author had a change of heart.

Except that I just went to the website, and it clearly is freeware. The game page says "Game download (free)" and includes some download links. Farther down the page is a "purchase / donate" button for those who would still like to send the author some money. The news section of his site also mentions the fact that the game has gone freeware in several places.

He does also mention that BMT Micro and Impulse are both still selling the game, though.
That's just ridonculous, those downloads weren't there when I checked thrice yesterday.
In fact the tabs weren't even there, just a Buy button.

That's weird. Maybe his site was having problems? I didn't mean to come off sounding rude in the last post, sorry. But I remember when the game went freeware about a year ago and I was surprised to hear he'd started charging again, so I went to the site, and... yeah.

Sorry!
