Who is Dr. Who and why does he have fans?

I have to admit, that I've never heard of Dr. Who. Is he a some sort of Bond villain?

It's a bit strange he says The Doctor is unknown in the US, San Diego Comic Con goes absolutely bonkers over it year after year. Also Torchwood was the highest rated show on BBC America.

It's known amongst sci-fi nerds and such, but in general it's pretty absent in US culture. As a big fan who collects the DVDs and talks about the show often I have rarely met anyone in person who has even heard of it.

Doctor Who is relatively unknown in America these days because it's just difficult to find it on TV- I've watch all the episode on DVD or over the internet.

It's a shame, too, since it's such an awesome show.

Dr Who appears on 2 or 3 simpson episodes. So they have fans at least on the Sriptwriters.
