orcishgamer: With that said, I still wish those who cared for him every condolence, as I would for almost anyone.
Which is ultimately what matters. I don't think it's really the right thread to bad mouth someone.
RIP.
Thanks for posting this, Dominic. I'm not a computer guy, but with this heads-up on his contributions it is easy to understand the enormous importance of this guy. I hope Unix and Linux continue to develop as formidable alternatives to a commercial world that would prefer to lock in customers rather than increase their opportunities and better their lot.

Agreed. I'm not sure it's really appropriate to say who we should be mourning more or use his death as a platform to bash someone else's life - I don't think that reflects the man. It's better to remember Dennis Ritchie's accomplishments, not the coincidental timing of his death.

Anyway, rest in peace Dennis and thanks for C and Unix!

True tragedy. Rest in peace sir.
Rest in Peace. Steve Jobs was a "genius" at selling useless, pricey and overrated crap, but this man made all the things I can do with my PC possible: work, games, hardware collection, learning, writing. Thank you so much, Mr.Ritchie.

P.S.I'm somewhat of a Windows guy, and the original Windows NT kernel was mostly written in C.....

Guys like him are the real tech heroes.

May his family and friends find strength.
RIP,

the great person that made everything that was known. Thanks for C, had a great time trying to make a game out of it.
This is a perfect example of why mankind sucks. We applaud those who speak loudly and have "charisma". You could line up a perfectly nice nerdy guy, who is always ready to help out anyone, together with a smooth talking criminal that has ripped off thousands, and people would always go for the criminal.

In this case, This man deserves far more credit than Jobs. Steve Jobs doesn't deserve to be called a genius - he didn't design anything - he "advised". Read: dumbed down, simplified, and made stuff that even the biggest idiot could use. And people applauded him because, for the first time, computers didn't make them feel like idiots!

Yes, Job's function was to make people think they're not idiots even if they are. By taking away freedom, choices, options - and he actually charged MORE for his simplistic crap than what you'd pay for a device that has no such limitations yet costs almost half that price.

And yet despite this, he received a cult of followers that would revere and worship him to a level where my faith in humanity dropped even more.
RIP
