Defender of the Crown, a 1986 turn-based Amiga gem will be taken for a few spins by Rurikhan, a Twitcher known for taking on the toughest games out there.

Join us later today at 8:00PM GMT on our official Twitch.tv/gogcom channel to see our second Twitch show. Subscribe and stay with us, to find out what shows we have in store for the coming Thursdays and what other fantastic hosts did we invite to our channel.

phaolo: Err.. shouldn't it be live now? I'm GMT+1 and it's 21.20 here..
I think it's a summer/winter time thing. It's easier to check the PST time, I find.
TIMING!
I haz munchies and liquid refreshments ready!
It's on!
It's not very much fun to watch someone play a game that has absolutely no idea what they're doing. He didn't even seem to pay attention to anything either. He picked the worst character at swordplay and then immediately attempted to raid a castle and couldn't figure out why he was defeated so quickly. Oh well...
He should have read the manual to proper jousting :)
This looks great so far, I wonder what computer configurations are specifically having problems with the emulation then.

It's been a long time, but I recall rarely even losing a joust. Did he ever win a joust? I gave up on him after a while...

Ah, I see thanks.
Nevermind, next time maybe.

He never won the joust, nor did he ever save one of the ladies. He did however eventually figure out how to win the catapult one, and he successfully raided enemy castles for gold a few times.
Any chance of this being exported to YouTube? Twitch and my internet connection don't see eye to eye. :)

previous twitch.tv session was uploaded to youtube, so I think it should be similar this time too...
and btw. it was great fun yesterday :D
Watching this, I mumbled all the time "why don't you use greek fire, idiot?!", but it seems, I have to apologize to the twitcher (Rurikhan?).

By chance I stumbled over this thread (http://www.retrogamer.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=49572&start=15) and post number 17 (from "Paranoid Marvin") cleared things up:

Quote: "MysticalMachineGun wrote:What's the difference between the Amiga and C64 versions? I know the Amiga version is far prettier but if there's less gameplay in the Amiga version, screw graphics.

The jousting and sword fighting are WAY too hard on the 'miggy. Much easier (but still not easy) on the other versions. On the other hand , the strategy side was SO easy on the Amiga. You could walk through the game in only a handful of turns. More often than not the enemy only had a handful of men, and by visiting Robin you easily outnumbered them. The ST/C64 versions were much more evenly balanced

Also lots of things were improved on the versions after the Amiga. On the Amiga, the siege allowed you to easily destroy the wall with lots of boulders, but there were no other missiles available. Other versions let you use greek fire and disease - it also didn't allow for so many shots. This meant it was more tactical; did you use disease and greek fire early to kill soldiers inside the castle, or did you destroy the walls to make the final fight more even? Or try to find the right balance between the two. The other versions had much better fight scenes - also the animation was basic, it was better than the Amiga's none - and rather than 3 options (attack, wild attack or retreat) you had a couple of others - you could 'outflank' the opposition, or if you had 20 catapults (not easy to accrue in the ST/C64 versions!) you could bombard the opposition - just watch a castle packed with soldiers and knights be decimated! Very satisfying.

Lots of other things as well. Castles could be left manned , so could areas without castles (but so not as well protected), you could ask for safe passage through fellow Saxon lands (as long as you hadn't previously attacked them!) - none of this could be done in the Amiga version. You could send spies to other counties (the Amiga you simply had to 'look' at them); unlike the Amiga you didn't get limitless movement/army building between turns so you had to consider your strategy and in the ST/C64 versions the sword-fighting gave you and your enemy an energy bar, so you could see if you were winning or if it was better to retreat; the Amiga had you both waving your swords until one of you dropped - until that happened you had no idea if you were winning or losing.

On a more debatable notes, I much prefer the tidier graphics of the ST version , and the music (although a little 'tinnier' on the ST) doesn't jerk about as much as the Amiga

Overall I would rate them as

1. ST - best version
2. C64 - incredible achievement and brilliant game
3.Amiga - still not a bad game, but rushed - loads stuff in the instruction book can only be done on later versions"

EndofQuote

From my playthroughs on the C64, I remembered, there was more to this game, than yesterdays twitch showed - I just didn't know, that the C64 version was so much superior to the Amiga version.

One lives and learns.

Now, bring on C64 games, GOG. ;o)

On one hand I want to shout: YES!
But on the other hand I really cannot imagine that it would be worth the hassle.
