Hi There

I Got Dead Space yesterday in the Ninja Thread, (thanx NameGoo). I haven't installed it yet.

This Morning a friend/workmate brought me a bunch of games he picked up yesterday at a pawnshop. in between the games, is dead space. . He picked it up for $0.50

Now my question is can one install Dead space from DVD and link it to the steam version?

There's a list here, but I think it's out of date:

Does the retail DVD come with a CD-key?

edit: the internets here says no:

Well you can add any game you have to steam, even if its not sold on steam. Is that what you mean?
No.

You might be able to link the code to your Origin account though, although it didn't work with my Steam version. It's quite possible that even if it works normally, that the code has been used.

I don't think so.

Like others said - you can install the game add it to your Steam library as a non-steam game, but you won't get updates et al.
Sadly you cant isntall it like that for steam. Only some games have retail versions with steam instalations. Maybe it will work on Origin but I'm not sure.

I'm pretty sure Origin will work. You can activate the Steam version, if you get Steam to cough up the reg key. At least that is what I remember.

Yes, he can. Start downloading Dead Space in Steam and stop right after start. Then install the DVD copy right into the Steam's Dead Space physical directory. After the install finishes, right click on Dead Space (in the Steam client) and run a file integrity check.

That's pretty nifty, does that work for all games, or for most?

Tried this. And it's not successful

It's quite possible that the directory structure was not quite the same as the one Steam was expecting. Are your game files in steamapps\common\dead space or in steamapps\common\EA GAMES\Dead Space? Or even steamapps\EA GAMES\Dead Space?

Well if the CD Key for the disc version has not been used by another person you should be able to add it to an Origin account, though you may need to contact there customer support since it is a few years old (I did this with Mass Effect and they added it no problem so it's more to just have another digital backup)
