Sad to see another AAA MMORPG going F2P.

Why is that? Just curious.
We were talking about this yesterday.

Not sure that it's sad, though. It can be beneficial for an MMO to go this route.
Only the fallen P2P MMO's go for F2P you know. It's kinda good for people doesn't wanna pay regularly but the worst part is they'll never make their games really free, just check out free account restrictions for DC Universe. "6 text chat messages per 30 seconds", lol?

Agreed about the "fallen" paid MMOs going that route indicating they are losing money. However, this was the best selling title for them in a long while. It sold well initially, hopefully enough to recoup the majority of the development costs. Between lifetime subscriptions and the initial subscribers, hopefully it was enough to be profitable.

At least the F2P will increase the install base and get them additional income. It just didn't seem like the game was deep enough to keep subscribers.

I'd bet paying for something just once removes a ton of restrictions. It's just to cut down on spammers. You can play for a week and see if you want to pony up 2-5 dollars for some little cosmetic thing on the store.

At any rate, I don't think it's sad. Turbine has earned way more off of DDO as a F2P game than they ever did as sub only.

F2P games do often fail but it's usually due to a bad game or bad implementation of F2P that they do. F2P in and of itself is not broken.
is this f2p for the consoles or pc?

PC for sure and I assume it's F2P (no monthly sub) on PS3, no idea whether you need a disc or can just download the client on the PS3, though. It's a SOE game though, no XBox 360 version:)
