Hi everybody,
For second time now Darksiders are on sale on steam. I just keep wondering whenever I should or shouldnt buy it. I am familiar with this gendre (player DMC and God of war) , but still I need your input.
Yay. It's cool and varied enough to be lots of fun.
I can't speak for the PC version, but I tried a demo for the PS3.

It has potential, but the art style is rather weak (feels like an imitation of Games Workshop) and the combat doesn't "feel" right.

DMC tends to feel like you are in an early John Woo movie. Artistically violent.
God of War "feels" like a brawl, where every hit is gruesome.

Darksiders (at least, the demo) doesn't have any particular style, but also feels like your scythe and sword are foam bats.
I played it on XBox and it rocks your socks. You play some dark, evil looking Link type charcter (actually your one of the four horseman of the apocalypse). The combat and skill leveling is very much like God of War and fun as hell. It's a good tribute to God of War in fact, very well done. Nothing in it is terribly hard, even on the hardest mode. There's nothing I would consider hard puzzles.

They do a complete story arc that is actually pretty decent. There's room for a sequel, which I would expect.

If you want something super challenging, get Castlevania and crank it up to Paladin. I think most people who've enjoyed a God or War type game with fun, buyable moves that a normal person can execute, will enjoy Darksiders. If you like achievements there's only one that's incredibly hard, the rest you can do pretty easily.
Nay. The gameplay was tedious, the graphics clashed with the setting and theme in my opinion, and it offered little to no challenge.
Didn't play (ultimately passed on it) but from the extensive amount of videos/playthroughs I've watched if you are familiar with the genre then this pretty much nails it.
I have to disagree with naysayers. Yes, it's very easy (I covered that before as a caveat), but they nailed the whole feel of it. It's a world slowly recovering from the Apocalypse, every single human is dead. You play one of the four horseman, what's more, you're War, and you have a serious grudge. If you don't like animation including hulking dudes wearing 300 pounds of armor and wielding a sword the size of a motorcycle you might not like the setting, though.

I don't know how much you'd be paying for it, I paid 20 bucks and thought it was well worth it.

Hell, the first time the Jailer popped up in front of me I was convinced it was epic.

Say hi to The Jailer for me:)

BTW, I said you can easily play through on the hardest mode, but do learn how to dash/dodge, life will be a lot easier for you.

So I guess my first playthrough will be on normal :) , is it good enough that you have motivation to play it more then just once?

That's a good question, I think replayability was a bit limited for me, I just played enough to unlock my final skills and revisited areas to collect Achievements and such, but it took me longer to finish as I was fighting everything on very hard mode, if I'd cruised through on an easier mode I might have still been up for the challenge. I can't recall how difficulty works with regards to achievements, but if you don't mind missing out on an achievement you adjust the difficulty at will in the menu, iirc (you'll probably bone the difficulty achievement, but you can also clear the first 3 areas really fast if you decide Apocalyptic is just too hard and want to start over). You can revisit old areas as you like if you miss any collectibles or want to soup up with extra life or whatever.

There's a couple early enemies that will seem hard on Apocalyptic or whatever when you first start out. There's a trick to each of them even with vanilla attacks (you can double jump over most demon's big overhand attacks if you see when they're coming, just jump behind them and keep wailing away - gets tricky when there's 2-3) and as you unlock abilities you can unload the whole can of whoop-ass on them later on to quickly eliminate them. Harpoon Tackle was really great for me early on as it allowed me to dash and attack at the same time. Later on you get a gauntlet and can ground pound which is way better than it looks as it can stun a half dozen angels around you at once. It can also rape a dozen weak enemies, like spiders if you prefer it to your Scythe attacks. Any time you can pick up a demon or angel gun they'll make quick work of anything tough, you just move slow, don't be afraid to drop em, clean up around you then pick it back up to keep firing at range.

You get a pretty powerful counterattack on perfect blocks which can clean up if you're good at timing. Otherwise just block what you can and dash/dodge stuff you can't.

I rarely used my Chaos Form even though it was full almost all the time, but it's your joker if you need it (you can fill it super fast with one of your Chaoseater mods). I also never got tired of my special, finishing moves (hacking the wings off an angel and gutting him was always my favorite).
Just finished the PC version last week. It's a great game. A combination of zelda and devil may cry. It took me about 30 hours to complete but I think a better player might be able to do it in 20.

The world is pretty colorful for the apocalypse. I was expecting brown.

The game didn't like my dualshock2 gamepad so I had to use the keyboard and mouse. That would be suicidal in devil may cry 3 or 4 PC but actually works quite well in Darksiders.

Wait.

Of course... Joe Madureira is the creative director. Why am I not surprised...
