Something of interest for RTS fans and F/OSS junkies - Dark Reign 2 has now been officially released under the LGPL, with a Google Code page hosting the download. The game's full source is posted, including the original assets - they even included the full complete game for download as a 790 MB .rar file.

The current focus of the game is getting multiplayer to work again, but I'd love to see an OS X/Linux port soon, too.

Edit: This likely isn't legal - see athomasm's post below, in addition to the /. comments on the link I posted. :(

Great news. Looks like we'll be seeing a Linux port at some point in the future then.

Begs the question whether it's worth it for GOG to keep selling it though.
Thanks for the info.
gog IS selling abandonware! :)
If it was "officially" open sourced why didn't this get announced by Activision when the code was leaked last September? And why does all the Pandemic code not have LGPL headers and instead only says:

"Copyright 1997-1999 Pandemic Studios, Dark Reign"

Also there is a bunch of third party code in there that specifically says it is proprietary under license or NDA such as Intel code:

"/*
* IMESHUtil.cpp
*
* INTEL CORPORATION PROPRIETARY INFORMATION
* This software is supplied under the terms of a license agreement or
* nondisclosure agreement with Intel Corporation and may not be copied
* or disclosed except in accordance with the terms of that agreement.
*
* Copyright (c) 1998 Intel Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
*
*
* PURPOSE:
*
* This file contains the implementation for the IMESH Utility
* functions that manage IMESH memory, read and writing of IMESHes, etc.
*
*
*/"

No one with a brain should touch this with a 10 foot pole until this is actually shown to be legal. I'd be willing to be Activision, Intel and all the other companies whose code got leaked are going to be quickly going after this now that it is getting more exposure.

As far as I see one of the former developer released the source-code and while gog has a contract with activision. So, who has the rights for the game, the old developer or activision? Unfortunately except one persons eMail I can't see any further details.

And from the source page, it does not look really legit to me:

This project wants to add multiplayer support for the game "Dark Reign 2" again! The source is available and yes: it's the full game.
no developer would write something like this.
Hmm, looking at some of the /. comments seems to support the notion that this was likely not an "official release" at all, but just another leak of the full source code. It's seems iffy at the moment as the earlier leak was by someone at Pandemic, and we don't know anything about who was behind this release.
Assets too? Awesome!

-edit- *looks at posts above*
Oh...

Awesome. Just.. awesome.

Though I preferred DR1 by far, yay for open source :D

EDIT: Note to self, refresh the topic if I've had the tab open for more than 5 minutes before posting.

I've contacted Activision to confirm the legitimacy of this though GOG could have a more direct line to them to get a faster answer.
Repo is a leak not official open sourcing.
