JustOrdinary: Just gave your album a listen. I do like some of your instrumental work, especially the songs where the guitar work is a little 'busier', like say 'Loving You', though I'd have to say I'm most fond of 'Dreaming Again'.
Others like the blues often feel a little too quiet, almost jarringly so. They're in desperate in vocals or something else to fill those gaps of silence, but as they are now, they're a little hard to enjoy.
I'm going to be a little brutally honest here and say I am not a fan of your voice. It's off-key at several points, and every time you try to carry your voice (for transitions and such), it comes off as rough and unpracticed. I know you're trying to imitate that dull, aching style of singing that's so prevalent in this kind of music, but when I listen to you, there's ... a slight offness, that I can't can't quite explain. It's kind of like a tone one would sing in if he's trying to parody the genre instead of emulating its voice-work.
Instrumental work is great though. 'Loving You' manages to convey a cascade of changing emotions like the title seems to convey, and 'Dreaming Again' evokes a sense of hopefulness bitterly entwined with a faint, but ever-present sense of self-doubt. The powerful climax seems to signal a triumph of one over the other, but the quiet little fade-out suggests the struggle may not quite be over.
A few hits and a few misses, I'd say. Thanks for sharing your music with me :)
I was terrified of singing on my first album. That would explain the off tones. Check out my newer stuff I'm working on on "A Taste of the Soul", there's two pieces with lyrics to them. Tell me if you think my vocal quality has improved ;)
EDIT: Also I don't pretend to have a trained voice. I am raw and that's part of what I'm selling. If Neil Young can make millions why can't I get by with a scratchy voice? ;)
