dawvee: Amazon probably does, but most of the ones I'd seen were DVD Region 1 - I had a good few when I moved across the Atlantic from Canada, but now I don't have a player to play them on.

Artificial Eye is a good bet for interesting films on Region 2 DVD, though. No Blu-Ray releases yet, but their catalogue has a ton of stellar films that aren't available anywhere in North America (not even Criterion).
I'll be going for Blu Ray versions, so won't be an issue since the PS3 is region free!

I see ^^

Hey, since everyone here is into the classics, I would like to recommend another good distribution company called Kino Video. They haven't got so many releases and mostly cover the early days (silent movies and such), but the quality is outstanding!
The Criterion Collection is pretty much the greatest thing ever. I own so many of them and their blurays are some of the best out there. On bluray, I've already picked up Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire, Playtime, The Thin Red Line and Days of Heaven and they are all astounding to watch.

I probably own about 25-30 DVDs. I'll have to look when I get home.

My favorite release is Days of Heaven, which isn't entirely fair as it's also my favorite film of all time.

nmillar: I'd never heard of the Criterion Collection before reading this thread, but some of these titles look really interesting. Now I just need to find somebody who stocks them in the UK!
The UK have a similar UK-based company to Criterion, Masters of Cinema. The quality of releases is really, really good, some fantastic films there too.

Awesome, yeah! Thanks for mentioning them. I used to have a bunch of old silent films (mostly Fritz Lang, a few others) on DVD from Kino, but sadly, like my Criterion ones they were all Region 1.

That movie always had the feel of the painting "Christina's World" by Andrew Wyeth to me. Very nice film and one of the few Richard Gere movies I can remember liking.

I don't have many of the Criterion DVDs but I do have Life of Brian and (my favorite) Brazil.
I can't remember if I have any actual Criterion releases.
We have a very similar distributor over here in Sweden, Atlantic Film, that basically does the same thing as Criterion in their "Quality Line" - releasing out of print/rare and/or classic movies, usually with well designed boxes and a small booklet, as well as some extra material on the DVD's. Several of their releases are re-prints of Criterion releases though, so if I count that, I think I have a few, like The Battle of Algiers, Le Salaire De La Peur and Gegen Die Wand.

i have few masters of cinema releases also, only problem is that they don't have so large range of movies.
I have a few Criterion's including the recalled version of 7 Samurai (The one that had the documentary on how much they had to restore the film, which got cut because it made the Japanese company look bad. This version of the DVD was only available for about a week before they recalled it) and Salo (disturbing film).

Nice, do you have cover pic of that 7 samurai movie and salo is prity sick movie, kind of guilty pleasure buy.
I recently received Last Year At Merienbad on Criterion Blu-Ray. I also have the Criterion DVD of Brazil... but I have the second release that only has two discs (but its still awesome)

As much of film snob as I might seem for having a title like Merienbad (a film I truly adore), I'm just as enthusiastic for good mainstream (Hollywood) stuff too. I'll be grabbing Iron Man 2 as soon as I see a good sale price.

My short list of "must get" titles are:

The Last Emperor by Bertalucci
A Face In The Crowd by Elia Kazan
Sunrise by Murnow
and a Frederick Wiseman documentary called High School

As a collector with over 1500 titles, I've had to learn to shop real smart to get low prices. If I paid list, I'd never buy movies... and I'd never be able to afford those rare gems that just don't come cheap.
I think you mean Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans by Murnau.

I heard Masters of Cinema gave it a great bluray release, but I don't have the free cash to pay of international shipping.

A Face in the Crowd is another one of my favorites. I'd love criterion getting a hold of that film.

And yea, I rarely buy any DVD/bluray full price. I tend to wait for Criterion releases to get to $20 or lower. and regular DVDs/blurays to $10 or lower.
you can get masters of cinema blu rays with free delivery from play.com. at least I got it there and yes, it's a considerable step up in quality. Their City Girl blu ray from Murnau is superb as well. They are in the same league as criterion and cheaper to get, at least in europe. great label and great selection. Planet sauvage came out as well, I hope someday they will release all movies by Ocelot as well.
