drevo2: I think it was in 2000 or 2001, on Gamecon -- a con focused on pen&paper RPGs and modern board & card games. There, I first saw and learned how to play Arena, a board game simulating a swordfight, made so that there is absolutely no random element in the game (no card shuffling, no dice rolling). And I found out I was
good at it. The con spanned three days, and on the second, I already got invited as an extra to the Arena championship, an event you usually had to register for weeks in advance. :-) I only made it to the fourth place, but still, great experience. :-)
This reminds me of my friend whose joined me at last minute for SDCC '07. My friend whose is huge fan of Yugioh card game and there was world tournament that took place there.
He was very nervous about it but I pushed him to do it since it would be very good experience for him. There were several international players there and my friend managed to came in 6th out of 200, which is very impressive feat.
To this day, I've been always proud of him for having massive balls and going against the stiff competition.
mrmarioanonym: I've been to the last two Gamescoms. First one was a great experience and I subscribed to a gaming magazine (PC GAMES (germany)). Played the preview of Age of Empires Online and
saw some hawt babes. Recorded some footage with my mobile (shitty quality). A really nice time was had. The second time was boring as hell, despite the masses. Almost nothing really interesting to see, even longer queues, it was hot as hell and I had a really bad headache later on. On the plus side, I bought the Beatles Sgt.Pepper.
Yeah... I get that impression with my first ever con, which was San Diego Comic Con '05. I was so overwhelming and speechless by how epic it was. But when it got super popular, it got bit dull, despite the fact that I have special pass that allow me to abuse/gaming the system for my own personal benefits.
Sgt. Pepper is quality album. My personal favorite album of all time. Sir.... you have an excellent tastes!
