On the last day of the weekend, we have two different contests for you all, giving you a final chance to win big before we resume our regular and humdrum week tomorrow.

For the brainy among you, we have a cryptogram. Decipher the hidden meaning behind the text below, send the full plain text (and an explanation how you deciphered it!) to us with the subject line, "GOG.com 2011 Cryptogram Contest". From all of the correct entries, we'll pull one lucky winner who gets 10 free $5.99 or $9.99 GOG.com games.

If you're feeling artsy instead, we have an alternative for you. It's coming up on the holiday season, and we'd like you to put on your advertiser hats. Make us an outdoor ad that you think would be an awesome GOG.com holiday advertisement. Whether you want to make a billboard by the side of the road, a clever bench, a bus stop ad, or even silkscreen an entire bus with an awesome GOG.com advertisement, let's see what you think this year's GOG.com holidays should be about. Email your best GOG.com advertisement to contest@gog.com with the subject line "GOG.com 2011 Advertisement" to enter. We will select some of our favorites from the entries and each winner will get 5 free $5.99 or $9.99 games from our catalog.

Since both of these contests represent something a little harder than the previous ones, we'll give you until 6.59 EST on Tuesday (15.11.11) to come up with your entry. We'll announce all of our contest winners on Wednesday, so keep tuned.

Put on those thinking caps, and let's see what you've got!
Have fun with that one, kids. I am not hardly an experienced cryptographier (I am relatively sure that is not a word), but I tried to come up with one that is tricky to solve without requiring you just brute force it. We'll see if I'm right about that. >.>

GOG.com: (and an eplanation how you decipheed it!)
avatar
tburger: Shouldn't be eXplanation?

Cool, I'll look into a code in the evening but don't think I'll manage to solve it.
Dangit. I edited that this morning before coffee; you can see the unfortunate result.

Profanity: This is killing me!

GoG person man, is it possible to figure this out on your own or was this encrypted in some already existing encryption and we MUST find it?

Not asking too much, am I?
It is encrypted using a fairly-well known encryption method which is known to be insecure and which can been coded by hand and also broken by hand. Although I would note that while it's pretty easy to encipher this, I don't think I'm smart enough to break this by hand.

wamu: A hint would be nice. I don't know where / how to start :(
We'll be posting a hint on Twitter/Facebook/here sometime tomorrow, I believe.

GOG.com: send the full plain text (and an explanation how you deciphered it!)
avatar
logorouge: Question: Do I need to put in the spaces/punctuations/proper lower & upper case?

Edit: Also, do I leave your typo in the text or can I fix it?
The typo is deliberate, as a milksop to preventing bruteforce, but you can fix it or not as you will. ;)
avatar
wormholewizards: But you must explain the answer. That's the hardest part.
avatar
Profanity: Well, if you found a successful decyphering tool, you just write that. It's not stated anywhere that that's against the rules.
Exactly. Although "I bruteforced it" is hardly an exciting answer. :P

Tsugirai: By the way, the ENIGMAticT should definitely use Enigma instead. Just sayin'.
avatar
Profanity: Wonder was this a clue or just as straightforward as it looks.
I don't think that Enigma can be broken with a pencil and paper. The system I used can.

I believe I promised a hint today, but in order to Playfair, I'll be posting one here, one on Twitter, and one on Facebook.

TheEnigmaticT: I believe I promised a hint today, but in order to Playfair, I'll be posting one here, one on Twitter, and one on Facebook.
avatar
mrkgnao: Assuming TheEnig is talking about three separate hints and since not all of us use F***book and Tw*tter, could someone post all three hints here. Thanks.
It will be a little while before I post them. But you don't need to actually use the service to be able to see our public posts. Just go to www.facebook.com/gogcom or www.twitter.com/gogcom and you can see what we post without being a member of the services.
avatar
mobutu: It seems that at least 2 guys (from canada and italy) had allready solved this.
I believe it is unfair to them to post hints.
avatar
tburger: This.
Or, if MrT posts hints - those 2 should get rewards promised to the winner independenly from other competitors.
I'm giving the folks who's already answered this a special prize of their own, yeah. ;)
avatar
Ryusui: What. The. Hell.

#2 can't be right. If it's a Playfair cipher, then both I and J have to be in the key matrix because they appear in the cipher - it's W that's missing from the ciphertext.

Lexor: Sigh, again, no reply from bot - soooo people are sending so many answers today? o.o
I think that the mailerbot is currently on strike. I've asked IT to repair him, but he's not really a priority for them. Still, we're getting all of your emails. ;)
avatar
bazilisek: Eureka! Got it. How did anyone figure this out without the hints is beyond me.

You owe me one night's sleep, GOG.

EDIT: Just found out I made a small mistake in the decoded text I've sent to GOG, but I hope it doesn't matter. I was too excited to read properly, I guess :) Is there a blue guy around who could dispel my fears, please? I'd hate to be disqualified for that, after going through all this.
If you got it but left in a typo or something, I'll count it. Given my record here on GOG of typing like a brain-damaged marmoset, I'd be pretty hypocritical to kick you to the curb for one. :P
Since so many of you wanted to know, here's the actual email we had going around here at the office with an explanation of this.

If you can solve this then youre very clever.
Will someone solve this thing sooner or never?
Encrypt via Playfair add some ROT Thirteen
And the solving gets tricky--for many I mean.

GOG puzzles are all in good fun
We hope you found this an enjoyable one.
Congrats to you, solver, for you are the bomb!
