I've been the victim of this myself (well technically I still AM since its not yet resolved) and its not fun to wake up & find you're $100 overdrawn because someone else decided you were buying them FIFA. MS refunded the money on the next business day so that was good but my account has been locked till they've investigated (sadly the same ID connected to my msn, app hub & microsoft beta testing so I've lost access to those as well)

Its not a system wide thing like the sony hack but several accounts have been cracked & abused so be sure to keep an eye on things because its a pain in the arse if it happens.

I don't even know what to think of that. Why is it so specific to the game and items? For lawls?
Not sure, some of the ars comments are speculating that its an EA based problem, I know my XBL & EA passwords were actually the same (and yes thats very bad as was the password).

I don't get why its specifically FIFA though, especially since a lot of the victims are saying they now have 2 fifa achievements, same as I now do, seems that someone is at least playing it...
I've heard of this. Apparently it has been going on for a while now, off and on. Stuff like this is also the reason why I never use my credit card on Xbox Live and only buy point cards when I plan on buying specific games and DLC right away.

The good thing is that credit cards haven't been compromised because of this issue, just used. Its not much of a distinction when you've lost money but the hacker can only buy things for that one account and nowhere else, unlike the sony hack where there was a chance that credit card data could have been exposed

Hence why I still refuse to put my credit card details on Live. I only use pre-paid cards for everything. I've also heard of people who have lost massive amounts of MS points because their account was hacked and then drained. I only buy MS points when I want to buy specific games or DLC. I never let MS points linger in my account so I can avoid such a situation, or at least never let more than a few dollars worth of points linger.

The Sony thing made me much more cautious of this stuff.
Thanks god i deleted my credit card off my account D:

Apparently it's a lot harder to delete than people think as far as Live goes.
Happened to me a while ago. I wondered why I couldnt log in to my acc, re-downloaded it and was surprised someone played FIFA 11 with it, only thing that is mysterious to me is the fact that I lost 4k something MS Points but nothing appeared on my list of stuff I bought. Never cared that much about it, changed my password and never had problems again. Lucky thing: Since I don´t have a credit card they couldnt spend a thing.
I was hacked in May of this year, so this has been going on for quite some time. The one thing to note is this is not exclusive to Xbox. I do not own a 360, but my GFWL account was compromised as they are both part of the LIVE network. So even strictly PC gamers can and are being affected by this.

The EA theory doesn't fly in my opinion, and I believe people are looking down the wrong path. The reason I say this is that while I have an EA and LIVE account, they utilize separate email addresses and information, so the two could not be linked. Yet, as with most others, the hacker was playing FIFA 11 at the time and going on quite a spending spree.

I honestly believe the problem lies elsewhere, but whoever is doing this is using it for FIFA and whatever shenanigans are going on there. Not having the game, I have no idea how it works, and whether they are able to trade the packs and players they are purchasing. I don't believe they are taking information through EA itself though, since that most definitely does not apply in my case.

The biggest problem for me is not that the account was hacked (I hardly use it), but that I had deleted billing information the previous year when I purchased a few games with deep discounts on the GFWL store (AoE3 for $.10). Somehow my billing information was reinstated and made use of. The customer service rep even acknowledged that I had removed my info and could see it in their logs, but yet, there it was reinstated and being used.

Anyway, I wrote about my experience back in May, which can be found here if anyone is curious:

Just know to be on the lookout even if you are strictly a PC gamer. If you have a LIVE account and ever used it for a purchase, make sure to do a thorough check, change password, remove billing information (even if this doesn't work 100%), and anything else to secure it further.
Thanks for the head up, I recently removed my credit card info with Xbox and only have 10 ms points on my account so I should be safe. Never again will I give them my cc info it took a week, 3-5 phone calls and lost my Xbox live gold for a week so they could remove my info. The customer service rep even asked my why I was removing it! ahhhh because its mine
