I have been part of champ sense the early preview events about 6 months or so and it is awesome the travail powers are nice and unique (ice slide, swinging, hover disk, tunneling) and the fact that you can combine any and all power sets as well as you have to pay attention to mana and maybe have to power up to release a big attack. active blocking and 4 classes that can be switched on the fly (well at least once because then it's 3 min or so i don't remember to switch classes again)

I hope they set up a free trial after launch. I'd like to try it, but Fileplanet is garbage, and I'm not anxious enough to play it to spend much time figuring out why said garbage doesn't work.

Reviving old topic!
Champions Online is free2play now. With a surprising amount of content for 0 green paper.
Your hero is restricted in powers (basically, classes) if you don't pay, but there is still a good amount of customization. Most of the srtuff is freely available, with additional costumes and some quests available for purchase.

I played this for a few weeks with a buddy about a year ago. It's decent. Combat is reasonably fun and semi-actiony (think one notch below Spellborn) and you have a lot more freedom in building your characters' abilities than in City of Heroes, although the powers weren't very well-balanced when I was playing.
The biggest problem I had with it was how repetitive the environments were. There are three zones from level 1 to level 30 (max is 40), and you'll bounce back and forth between all three during that entire time period, doing fairly typical MMO quests. At level 30, you unlock one additional zone. I made it to level 30, but by that point I wasn't too interested in continuing on just to see one more zone.
I don't know if they've added new zones since then
Random anecdotal observation: in City of Heroes everyone made their characters look like Superman or Wolverine, but in Champions Online, everyone wants to be a winged devil creature.
