Rucksack: Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't think it would be the end of the world if violent content was in danger of being censored in the USA.
Before you jump to conclusions, I really don't think that violent video games cause violence or any of that fluff. I simply think that it might be nice to go back to a time when developers who produced hyper violent games were a rarity and not the norm.
I think it hurts the entire product, because the developers bank on shock value and don't flesh out the gameplay mechanics. In fact, I really can't remember a super violent game that was fantastic.
Maybe not a government ban, but maybe the industry should start to frown upon all this super violent silliness.

Well, we already censor the heck out of video game boobies here in the US. That's why Sacred was censored and we had last minute edits on Giants: Citizen Kabuto (blood changed to green and Delphi had a bikini top added at the last minute).
I always wondered whether some of the games here on GOG are the more or less censored versions.
The US censorship is pretty bad, actually, and occasionally it just comes from the publisher strong arming the devs, so it's random (movie ratings are super random in the US too, but for far different reasons).

That's the whole reason I started this thread. I'm thinking about buying Duke Nukem 3D, but I don't know if the version here is the censored one.
In our country, every time a politician speaks up about violence in video games and it's rating system, we all just unanimously yell "dude games are for kids, you call yourself a man of high politics or something?", and they back off really quickly, works every time. Just the fear of being branded a VGPolitician is something of a stigma here, I guess.
That said, I could send my little sister (eleven years old) to the store to buy me GTA4 from the shelf with a PEGI +18 on it, no problem at all. But don't worry, that's just for games. They wouldn't let her buy alcohocol, cigs or porn, anywhere.

And honestly, I don't even see the problem with a kid picking you up beer at the store. It's legal in some countries and they have a lower incidence in underage drinking (their drinking age is lower, of course) than we do in the US. Of course, I'm assuming the kid is old enough to shop on their own. Porn is generally packaged differently from alcohol or cigs, so a child buying it for an adult would be exposed to it, I allow for a different treatment of it in my own moral code (not judging how a kid should be exposed to sex, that's up to the parents, imo, just saying I see why a porn purchase would be treated differently than alcohol or cigs under the law).
