I'm still trying to figure out whether Capcom had add-on games before 1994 because koei already had Romance of three kingdom IV add-on during 1994 summer(slightly earlier than Sonic and Knuckles).

I believe, some company (probably Capcom) did register a patent for putting a life bar above a character.

Hmm... you might be right. Maybe that's why Capcom "suggested" a licensing fee of 5 to 10 percent as part of the lawsuit. If that is why they did this, that is pretty sad.
