I've been trying to remember a game that I played when I was a kid and enjoyed it but only because I thought it was cool. Now that I think back and am now heavily into true RPG games like the D&D installments and Ultima, I really want to get back into this game. Here are details that I remember.
1. It was on the PC.
2.The battle system was set on a grid-based system with hexogons as the grid.
3.Exploration was done via the point-of-view with arrows to click on, forward back left right, and even turning right left and a complete about-face.

Not much I can remember. It's late 90's I'm pretty sure.
Can you give more details? Was this an RPG? What did the units look like? Were they single units or did a squad fit in a hex? Was it a medieval setting? Was combat turn-based or real-time? By battle-system, do you mean that an encounter is taken to a second battlefield with hexes or is the whole game hexes where you move around?

Please, describe the game's intro as well as the background (game objectives, etc).
So we're looking for an old RPG that switches between first person 3D dungeon exploration and third person turn-based combat on a grid, like the Goldbox games, Realms of Arkania or Albion, only with hexagons instead of squares?

I played this so, so long ago, so I'll try my best.

Yes, it was an RPG where at the beginning you had two guys to control, I believe. There were single-man units and was turn-based combat. The battle system went like this. You have an encounter, the screen goes black and you then see your guys in some hexes and the opponent(s) on the other side of the grid. Outside of combat was POV, like I said in the OP and you clicked the arrows to move around, like a dungeon explorer but you weren't in a dungeon, at least at the start. You started out in the outside, but I'm not sure which setting.
Update

I found the game, and it's on GOG thankfully. It's apart of the Betrayal at Krondor pack.

That what I was thinking it sounded like. Enjoy that game, it is great fun! I HIGHLY recommend Baldur's Gate 1, and Ultima 7, but you probably played these classics. ;P

I have not, but that's only because I've grown interest very recently since playing both of the Neverwinter Nights installments and recent tabletop encounters.

:O Get them both now! Baldur's Gate is one of my favorite RPG's when it comes to atmosphere and story. Ultima 7 was one of the first true sandbox rpgs, with a HUGE world to explore, and you can literally pick up everything you see. Both veery good!
