Ghildrean: The problem with Risen on Steam is that it has TAGES without the possibility of recovering the activations, unlike the retail version. So I don't recommend purchasing Risen on Steam. Of course, if Risen shows up here at GOG, that would be an excellent addition.
Deep Silver has already sent an update to Steam that removes DRM, we're just waiting for it's implementation.

It might take a while, though. The Divinity 2: DKS devs sent a DRM-Free update back in november, but it seems it only got implemented... Yesterday.
Well, I like supporting GOG more than Steam. That's why I go to GOG whenever a games is available here. Even when paying more.

I'm not a "steam-phobic" or a "GOG fanboy" (well the latter mayber a little), but I like to see the concept of GOG succeding.

And, as others have mentioned, don't bother with anything but Gothic 1 + 2 Gold.

Sequiro: But here if I buy the whole series that's available (Gothic 1, Gothic 2, Gothic 3, Gothic 3 Exp.) That's $40.
Another option is Gothic Universe for 19.99 EUR ( $25) on Dot Emu - DRM free including G1, G2 + AddOn, G3

But I would rather stick to GOG :-)

Or buy the boxed version of Gothic universe.

Basically the games you want in the Gothic series are: Gothic 1-3 (with the expansion for 2) and Risen (Risen is closer to being the real Gothic 4 than Gothic 4). The Gothic series is great, just be prepared for a steep learning curve, and controls that feels very awkward at first (but later on becomes second nature)

Metro09: You only want Gothic 1 and 2. Maybe 3. Not Forsaken Gods and definitely NOT Arcania/Gothic 4. Not only is it not a Gothic game but it is just a horrible ARPG even when viewed in isolation.

As for GOG versus Steam -- I'll let the GOGite fanatics have at their spiel.
Trust this guy, he is definetly right, when Piranha Bytes left, the Gothic series became horrible. So I would also say, buy Gothic 1-3 here on GoG (but not the Addon for Gothic 3) and then Risen :-)

Sequiro: I haven' played the Gothic series before but the games are spot on my cup of tea. Everytime I see any of them I salivate at the thought getting them, I like buying games here more for the most part, however...

But here if I buy the whole series that's available (Gothic 1, Gothic 2, Gothic 3, Gothic 3 Exp.) That's $40. Gothic 4 isn't available here.

But if I buy the Gothic: Full Package on Steam for $50 I get all that plus Gothic 4 and it's Expansion. It's definitely a case where somehow Steam comes off as the much better deal.
As people have been suggesting, it depends how much DRM-free, and maybe some goodies & working on modern systems/some forum assistance if it doesn't, is important to you. If none of that bothers you, then go ahead with Steam.

I personally don't have much problem with Steam, if there's a game not here that's there. But if it's here, and not too expensive, why not. I don't buy games I'm not interested in just to support a client, but if it's one I want (and there's not an outrageous price difference), I'll take a company's reputation into consideration. (I do very much like GOG, but improvements could certainly be made.)
Don't get it on GoG or Steam. Get it on GOG.
For what it's worth I got 1, 2, and 3 (only ones you want) for $6 during a Steam sale. If you don't mind Steam then it's definitely the cheaper option if you catch a promo. GOG rarely discounts games more than 50% so you're looking at $15 for all three on GOG.
