Alrighto, I used to have this demo of strategy game (I think) that came out before 2000. The only thing I remember is that you picked your general/character and assigned them different schools of magic by giving them on a selection screen coloured orbs (or so I think). By selecting more of the same schools you got access to higher-leveled spells, and the awesome thing that stands out in my mind is that these different schools of magic mixed, so you had mixed spells as well.

Now, I'm not entirely sure if it was orbs, I just remember a darker screen background where I could click in the lower bottom on those magic schools, which went upwards and stayed there.

I don't know if I've played the game itself or not, since all I remember is this but for some reason I'm pretty sure it was a strategy game, a bit similar to HOMAM.

Disciples? Master of Magic?
That was my guess as well, but I've never actually played it, so I couldn't be sure.
Age of Wonders.

I'm playing it right now:) I totally recommend it.

Well, it's in my backlog, along with a huge pile of other games. For the past few years, I've been buying games a lot faster than I can play them. All the indie bundles haven't helped.

It's basically just a fantasy spinoff of Master of Orion. How good could that be ...
For some reason I feel like Master of Magic isn't it and Age of Wonders looks too modern, I've tried the game and it was definitively a different game.

I've got MoO in my backlog and am looking forward to it, does MoM have so much complexity as MoO2?

Move it to the top of the line, trust me.
It's either this:

or this:

there's no other way!

No, it is more along the lines of MoO 1. Roughly the level of complexity as Civ 1 for example.

It is awesome, however. As I said, just a fantasy remake of MoO.
I've just tried googling again, looking for games similar to MoM.

It's Magic and Mayhem: Art of Magic.

*solved* YES!

Thanks for the tip, I've bought MoM some time ago here, so I'll try it out eventually.

I used to play Civ 1 ages ago and it was great fun, I loved when you got those upgrades.

and Magic and Mayhem: Art of Magic looks less modern than Age of Wonders? :P and it's not even similar to HOMM! ;p
I know, I know :D.

I did say I couldn't remember the gameplay itself, only the selection screen. I think I thought it's similar to HOMAM because it's also a strategy game (although it's got action elements too) and it's fantasy themed.
