I'm new to gog. I just bought Duke Nukem, Ishar 1 and 2, and Redneck rampage. I noticed as I had finished downloading them all that the system requirements were XP or Vista. I ran one of the setup apps in XP, and wondered if I could then take the files installed, burn them to a CD, then copy these files to an old 486/Pentium computer, and just run the games? (I like retro PCs, it's what I'm in to.)

Quite a few games on GOG have been modified from the original version to ensure better compatibility with XP and Vista. I imagine this would cause issues if you then tried to run these modified games on a Win9x or older OS. But if you've already bought the games just give it a shot and see what happens... far more reliable than my idle speculation.
for the games you mentioned it is possible. be sure though to run setup/install for each game in order to configure the sound
You should be able to run the games fine. "Modified for XP/Vista" in many cases means "comes with preconfigured DosBox for XP/Vista". Losing the DosBox and just using plain Dos should then be entirely possible.

Thanks very much for everyone's help, much appreciated.
I'm in a similar predicament. I've tried this with Redneck Rampage and was able to get the game to run on an older machine using Windows 98, but I haven't been able to get the CD Audio to work. They included disc images with the GOG install, but they use odd file extensions (.gog and .inst) that I have been unable to get working. I've tried renaming them to .bin and .cue files, but it doesn't seem to make them valid images I can work with. I wish they'd give you the option of downloading the games in their original oldschool format in addition to the DOSbox emulated versions they offer now.

But original oldschool format = potential DRM.
