If you have a xbox, then immediately buy Ikaruga on XBLA.

ExecB5: Jamestown looks nice too.
If you have some friends to play it with, I highly recommend Jamestown. Even if you don't, it's still pretty fun.
Google "rRootage", it's a surprisingly good freeware (and, I think, open source) shmup. :)

I used to play ikaruga on the GC, it's a great game!
Well if you ever play Touhou, i would recommend Touhou 12 Undefined Fantastic Object. I personally think its the best one and has great music that fits with as well just like all the other touhou games.
Try Kenta Cho's rRootage. It won't cost a penny, and there's versions for Windows and Linux. Four different modes, and the final stages are just plain scary as far as the bullet count goes. Good luck! ...You're gonna need it.

thanks for the tip, got it for my ipod, it's free in the app store
Anything developed by CAVE is awesome. DoDonPachi, Deathsmiles and Guwange to name a few. Radiant Silvergun is also awesome and was recently re-released on XBLA.

grviper: Alas, they're not free.
How do you expect ZUN to pay for beer if you don't buy them?

Haha, beat you to it!

Actually, I'm glad I'm not the only one suggesting rRootage. :P

The game lags on my pretty decent spec laptop on the final stages due to the number of bullets, so "plain scary" is an apt description.
