Ok, so I can get Castle of the Winds, a Windows 3.x game to run in Virtual XP mode with no extra conditions, but unfortunately, I can't say the same for Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I wanted to play through the Single Player campaign quickly before I started playing the newer Wolfenstein.

Anyway, I tried installing RTCW on Win7, and I patched it all the way up to 1.41. Opening the MP exe got me into the Main Menu for the Multiplayer game, but when I clicked the "Switch to Single Player" button, the game crashed to WER, just to tell me "WolfSP.exe has stopped working." and didn't offer any other info. I then tried installing it in Virtual XP mode, but when I ran it, it crashed, tell me in the Quake III-ish console that it "couldn't open OpenGl subsystem". Apparently, my hardware isn't shared across the virtual machines, so I can't just install XP drivers for my video card in XP Mode.

The only solutions I can find for this involve nHancer and nVidia cards (you know, that "set Driver Extension Limit to 4844" thing?), so I'm out of luck unless someone here has a bright idea.

Have you tried this or this?

The first link, which goes to the Steam forums, supplies an unreliable solution for older ATI drivers. I tried overwriting the files with those given in that thread, and not only did they not work for RTCW, they screwed up everything else. I had to do a complete System Restore.

I have absolutely no idea what that second link is. It looks like an uncompiled source.

In future, please explain your links in your posts so that anyone else who reads the thread knows what's going on. You know how people can't be bothered to click on links to find out for themselves.

[EDIT]
That second link IS uncompiled source, and I haven't anything to compile it with.

Sorry but I'm not good at explaining thinghs in english.

I don't understand how the first solution could have messed your system. Have you putted the dll into the game's executable folder?

For the second solution you can find the binaries here and an explaination here (from the google cache because the page is not availabe)

Right click the .exe and put it on compatibility?

That and install it in another folder than program files.
I have nothing constructive or helpful to say here, only that Castle of the Winds is awesome. :D

I have no idea either. As for those binaries, thanks. I went and downloaded VC++ 2010 Express just for the purpose of compiling that code, and I still couldn't figure it out. Those compiled binaries did the trick.
I played RtCW not long ago without a problem... Steam version. That doesn't help at all, I know, I'm just saying this surprises me.
