I noticed that there are a bunch of free games on here and just wondered if anyone knew if there were any plans to bring Bethesda's elder scrolls games 'Arena' and 'Daggerfall' over onto the free games portion, as they are free to download on their site just a nightmare to get to work on dosbox, anyone have any idea? I know its a bit of a long shot, just thought if there are no plans then maybe their should be as the elder scrolls games have a massive following and would bring more people to the attention of GOG.com...

cheers.

GOG doesn't have a deal with Beth / Zenimax.

Not yet, at least.
That would depend upon getting permission to do it and on GOG being willing to host the files.

It definitely could happen as evidenced by the various free games on the site, but free games are released relatively infrequently.
Bethesda isn't part of GOG and GOG can't offer those freebies without Bethesda's participation. If GOG is trying to get them on board, they won't tell us anything about it until the deal is done.
There are versions out there that are apparently easy to install and play on modern systems. I haven't checked them out myself, though.

First, why don't you try a dosbox integrated version of both games, like arenasetup and Daggerfallsetup?

Second, being free to download somewhere doesn't mean you can start putting it for dl somewhere else without the original owner's permission. From their EULA:

1. You have a non-exclusive, non-transferable license and right to use this Product for your own personal use and enjoyment. This Product is not provided for any non-personal, commercial purpose. All rights not expressly granted to you herein are hereby reserved by Bethesda Softworks.

Hope that clears it up. I wouldn't be sad if they did secure some rights to download, though.

Edit: heh, ninja'd hard.

ah o.k. thank you. thanks for the links too.
Google DaggerfallSetup. It's a GOG-like Daggerfall. Click, install, play and that's it.

ugh...Daggerfall is a NIGHTMARE to get working (unless you just run it through DosBox, and even there...)

really? 'cause I used that and still ran into all sorts of trouble with things like mouse control (apparently you need to get a program to actually SLOW YOUR COMPUTER DOWN so that strafing and looking works properly) and sound.

And in the end, I found the game to be incredibly bland and boring. But that's me...I know Bethesda games tend to be for a certain type of person.
I have played arena now and it is as good as i remember it the first time round.

Yet to play daggerfall... hope that one is as good and has all the bigs i rememebr. lol.

Thank you all for your help. Will update on how i go.

DaggerfallSetup work perfect for me on Win7.

Bethesda's instructions on how to run Daggerfall in DosBox worked perfectly for me on Vista.

As for the game, I like it. Character creation has more options than later games. It has more freedom than later games (climbing, flying, buying houses and boats). And you don't have to plan your level ups to avoid getting low stat gains.

Oh, I know that the game excels in the amount of stuff to see/do...but with Bethesda, I've never felt like it really "worked" for me. I love having a lot to do, but doing it has to be fun for me also.

As I said, I understand that their games are for a certain type of person, and I'm probably not that type of person.
Yep, I was very surprised not to find any Elder Scrolls on GOG as i'm playing Skyrim right now i wanted to have a hint on the older episodes.
True is that it will bring lot of people on GOG!
