Sabin_Stargem: Come to think of it, I have a stealth game that I recommend to avoid: No One Lives Forever 2. Having replayed that game about half a year ago, I have found that stealth is extremely difficult because the guards can infinitely respawn, and are easily attracted to where the player is. Well and truly the opposite of Thief, in my opinion.
I don't think its accurate to categorize NOLF2 as a stealth game. First, the RPG elements are tacked on. They aren't primary in gameplay, they are more like optional achievements. Second, the stealth is optional. The positions are predefined but you don't have to use them and they are few and far between.

Calling NOLF2 a stealth game is much like calling Doom 3 a point and click adventure. If this is what bothered you about NOLF2, I'd suggest trying again and just ignoring the stealth aspects. If you just hated the game, that is fair too, but I wouldn't grade it on its stealth "feature".
Here's a good one. :)

I didn't like NOLF2 either, and I really liked the first game. I was expecting to be able to take a stealthy approach like I did before, but the respawning enemies (and the fact that enemies wake up very quickly after being knocked out) made it too difficult to pull off. I tried playing it as a straight-up FPS, but that's not a genre I enjoy, and eventually I gave up on it.

Cavalieroscuro: I really love the MGS saga.Ok,the stealth mechanic is not the best (Splinter Cell is way much better),but the plot and characters are wonderful.
i think Peacewalker is my favorite MG, stealth-wise.

i just really like that game.

Metal Gear on NES was my first stealth game... to be fair, it might be the first on ever (well, MSX version, but you should get my point)
I think the best stealth game I've played was the original Splinter Cell.
I do have a stealth game recommendation: Riddick - Escape from Butcher Bay. While there is a fair bit of gunplay, Riddick is best suited to stealth takedowns and working in the dark. There is also sidequests and some goodies that require exploration to discover, which is a plus in my opinion. The strongest point of Butcher Bay lies in the setting, which is well executed and actually reflects the source material quite well. As such, this is one licensed game that I would thoroughly recommend.

The recent deal on GOG for Dark Athena includes an remade version of Butcher Bay, but I can't speak for the Dark Athena portion of the game. (Haven't played it, yet.) Still, having an version of Butcher Bay that is DRM-free and with improved graphics is an good deal, so I recommend picking it up. Right now it costs $6.00 until the 13th.

The Dark Athena is mediocre at best. It seemed to just be a reason to rerelease Escape from Butchers Bay. Butchers Bay was so good that The Dark Athena was forgiven. I really enjoyed Butchers Bay. It has a great mix of everything, but you can definitely play it stealthy most of the way through. In my mind it still ranks up pretty high on my list of favorite games.

Sorry if this post doesn't make sense. I've been awake for too long.
While the game is certainly not a stealth game(and you will be thoroughly disappointed if you get it as such), Rogue Spear has the recon missions. I think there are only 2 but they take a lot of patience. You can't kill or be detected or its mission failure.

If you like the stealth gameplay of MGS but hate the story(I don't - it's one of my favorite series), then Headhunter is a carbon copy of the stealth gameplay but with a much more conventional, and less preachy storyline.

Hitman and Commandos style games are more puzzle-oriented stealth while Splinter Cell and Thief are more patience and timing based, not that either style is wrong. I like finding alternate solutions in the puzzle-oriented ones though. Example Codename: 47 - Mission 4.

Also XIII while not a stealth game has similar "stealth" to the NOLF series.
I have played thief and it is awsome grr I am divided

Splinter Cell 1,2,3 vs Thief 1,2,3

I think Thief wins due to having all 3 installments on GOG. ;P
