right now steam has a sale on the latest game from hardcore rpg makers spider websoftware, avadon. Since I havent played any game from the studio, games much like BG2 or planescape, with epic size and great stories, I wonder which one is best and which one to start with. Check out their webiste on

I rather like their Geneforge series. Avadon struck me as a bit generic.

a shame, tell me what you like about geneforge! And have you tried avernum? or perhaps nether gate? anyone, tell me everything:)
Having played every Spiderweb Software game (Except Blades of Avernum), and completed most of them (Geneforge 3 I sort of ermmm... Closed it one night and never bothered going back to it), Avernum 3 has to be my favourite. Except for the generic NPC shop keepers, it was the best fleshed out game I've played. Mind, for story, I think Exile/Avernum 2 is far superior...

Geneforge, I never really got into... Vogel seemed to get stuck on the 'No-one can be happy, and everyone dies' vibe for 3-5 (And Avernum 6)...
Hi

Does anyone know if this Avadon on sale on Steam is any different then the version for the Ipad?

Rather than best Spiderweb Game, I will link to what I think is the best spider webgame.

does all this mean that the new avadon is not the best game by the company? avartur and geneforge are better? then, shall i start fgrom the very first game in respective sedries or start at the more modern implementations?

Although it might not be the best one, as it's pretty cheap on Steam, I would be tempted to start with Avadon to at least get a feel for his games. I can't say personally, as I have yet to play them...I can't bring myself to buy them individually at the prices he asks, but I can't afford the compilations!

I have bought the iPad version of Avadon, because it's cheap (like me) and I'm more likely to play a portable version. If I like it I might try and save the USD75 for the Geneforge collection.

This one one I have not purchased from him, but by all reports he went to a lot of effort to simplify things and draw in a bigger audience. Some people thought that was okay and some people didn't. For his own sanity he says he rarely reads his games' forums.

He offers extremely long demos, you could always try it out from his website and if you like it get the Steam version (if you can afford it probably buy it from him, the dude sells under 10k units per game as it is).
All SpiderWeb Softwares games have very similar gameplay, only the story changes significantly (Though Geneforge games feature a single person (mostly) as opposed to a party). Avadon though is an entirely new IP, and the first story in its 'world'.

Note-His demos for old games are very long but the new game demos are not. Avadon was probably the shortest demo he made. I would recommend geneforge for story or avadon for party based as it is practically a bioware made game.
