Minor Spoilers....
But yeah, you survive this wreck, no other survivors. You're given something very important by a dying man. Someone rolls along and tells you you are the subject of some prophecy and then some other dude tries to trick you into giving up the very important item you just received.
Obviously a matter of personal opinion but I always thought Arcanum had a pretty awesome intro

The list is very slanted towards modern games, so much so that I think the list's author probably just hasn't experienced many older games.

Quake II was very effective.
The original Fallout(s)' were awesome, yes. Link to direct inspiration.
"Sorry for the wait Mr. Florez, I'm ready to take you now."
"New angels of promise..."
Blade Runner
L4D, very well crafted and you learn (what little there is to know) of the characters and enemies. It even showcases some game mechanics.
Max Payne 2
Orcs piloting fighters. Attacking a blimp. Over mellow violins. "Find the boy!"
