And, no, this is not an "I want this game on GOG" kinda thread. :)

It's just a question directed at anyone who has played the game and remembers it. There are spoilers about it in these here paragraphs and the only reason I'm posting it here instead of a BFME forum is because, well, I kinda know this community better and don't feel like registering elsewhere just to get a question answered.

I'm currently playing the game and have defended Minas Tirith successfully. I can take my forces and attack the Black Spire when ready and a bunch of missions I haven't done pop up for me. I've currently maxed out my Rohirrims and Rohirrim archers, along with the Rohan Heroes and I've got six missions left open for me to try and do the same for the Gondor army and it's heroes.

Alas, I have mostly archers and soldier battalions, not tower guards or rangers. I think I have 2 ranger battalions and a knight one, but the rest of the 300 army supply is filled up with rank 5-7 battalions of Gondor archers and soldiers, so I have two choices: Either rank them up with the remaining missions to level 10, or play "bad" general, sacrifice the whole lot of grunts, which will allow my archery and barracks to level up and be able to hire rangers and tower guards instead... at rank 1. The banner upgrade will get them to rank 2, but with six missions left, I'm likely to end up with a ranger and tower guard army that will be no more than rank 6.

So that's the question. Which is better for the final mission, which i don't know how it will play out, except from what I saw in the movie... an army of rank 10 soldiers and archers, or rank 6 - 7 rangers and tower guards?

Sorry can't help you since I never got that far into the game but I would say go with your instincts and do what you think is best - that's the point of a strategy game. If you read faqs and guides etc. the game looses its idea. Save your game and try one and if that doesn't work then try the other option. Just a thought.
I would say, from my experience, it is definitely worth getting the rangers at least. The advantage of going for tower guard over leveled up soldiers is a little more dubious

I think this is the only good place for discussions about BFME and BFME2. Probably another good place is official forums, but years ago I had a problem and there weren't much activity, while on Gamereplays there are many active users and it's a great place for replays of all sort. :)
I have both games for years, but I really can't remember the missions at all. :(
I'd drop 1 or 2 gondor archers for rangers, because rangers are insane. The rest I'd keep as is. Then worst case if you lose soldiers on the final mission just build tower gaurds then. You shouldn't have that much trouble though.

The problem with this approach is that i would have to replay six missions just to find that out if I start getting my butt handed to me with the worng choice... and it's the main reason I'm asking around. :)

I'm seriously considering going half and half. Turns out you can mix battalions and their rank ends up being the rank of wichever battalion was highest, so i guess I can sacrifice low rank soldier battalions, make tower guards and combine them with higher rank archer battalions. That's worth some testing out.
Only follow this If you're not playing with patch 1.3, which makes all the heroes weaker then a rotting zombie.

Should be fine with anything you do.With powers like cloudbreak, summon elves, army of the undead, gandalf's and aragorn's level 10 power.Last time i played the black gate mission in the campaign[on the hard setting],had most of my hero units at level 10 and not many minions past level 2. Did have to hire new minions from time to time.
Warning spoiler warning!

All your enemies at the black gate will be rank 10.The orc archers will have fire arrows[all enemies will be fully upgraded].
Just wave after wave of orcs at first, then you get evil men, trolls, giant elephants, and a few nazgul.Gandalf and your archers[archers heroes if you need more fire power] should be able to take care of the nazgul. Level 5 power of gandalf's can deal great damage to a nazgul.

Gandalf's leadership can keep your minions safe from running[or cowering] in fear.
You will be able to summon your other army to battle, after some time has pass in this mission. With all your heroes and their aoe powers, everything but maybe the trolls[aragorn may make a great troll killer] and elephants should be easy to kill off.As you reach the end a timer will be set off and the hordes of mordor will pour out on to the field with their unending might!Once the timer ends you win.

You? Uruk, the resident GOG necromancer, played with the forces of... good?

I'm thoroughly disappointed. :)

I just played a couple of the missions in, with the intent of killing just one soldier battalion and getting towerguards, when my archer army ran into catapults and saw their numbers diminish somewhat, so now i had space to add a couple of rangers and a second knight battalion. I combined the newbie tower guards with rank 6 archers and pushed the newbie rangers to level 3, abusing the experience granting spells of Legolas, Boromir and Faramir.

Thanks for all the replies!

The so called good guys can summon up a unstoppable horde of undead.

One man's hero is another man's villain.Sure Aragorn will be a hero to rohan and gondor, to the orcs he will be the villain.

That made me laugh out loud. Well played!
