I'd fire up a Linux LiveCD and use the dd command.
I had that issue, cloning a smaller drive to a bigger one with the OS.
I used Acronis True Image on a live cd. That thing worked wonders, worth its money.
It wasn't IDE to SATA, but as long as the SATA isn't in some kind of a RAID setup it shouldn't give you any problems.
Supposedly, with Acronis, if it can see it, it can use it.
The thing even saw a USB stick. Its is own OS that application.

My boot disk was on its way out. Cloned it on a new HDD that had nothing in common with the old one, and windows didn't realize anything. Didn't ask for a recovery console or repair.

As much as I hate raising dead threads (I consider threads that haven't had a response in two weeks "dead"), I thought you folks might enjoy an update. I decided to purchase a Western Digital Velociraptor 150GB to replace my aging IDE boot drive. I figured a 150GB "traditional" HD with 10K RPMs was just as good as a 150 GB Solid State Drive, and it cost half as much (got mine on Amazon for ~100$).

Western Digital supplies a specialized version of the Acronis TrueDrive cloning utility, which made everything completely painless. I mean, it was practically "point-n-shoot" with this thing. But you have to have a WD drive installed, or it stops you from installing the program.

And Schwarzenegger's returning to acting! All is right in the cosmos...for now. *cue approach of Unicron, Galactus, and Co.*

Howe long have they been doing that? Thats pretty sweet. The "only works with WD" thing should be easy to circumvent since it'd just read the manufacturer ID

Returning? I know he's made some movies but I never knew he acted!

Paul Hogan, Yahoo Serious...do you really want me to go there?
From what I read, Shadowprotect can do a hardware independent restore as well. I know it is great for servers and I believe there is a personal edition that has pretty much all the same abilities.

Actually, I love Yahoo Serious. "Reckless Kelly", anyway. "Young Einstein" and "Mr. Accident" I could take or leave. Paul Hogan had "80's appeal", like DEVO and all the other stuff Seth McFarlane pokes fun at on Family Guy.
