Arkose: You get a certain period within which to download (this varies depending on the publisher) so you can re-download if needed, but once that period ends you can't download without the time extension. You may be able to back up the installer for re-installation after the expiry datebut this will depend on the specific DRM that has been used.

Either way this is one of several reasons why buying directly from the publisher tends to be worse than buying through a proper digital distribution service.
Sheesh, that is crazy. Guess all of those gigglebits add up since they can't just be that greedy. Right? :)

DaoJones: Yeah, this digital stuff is a bit crazy with the big companies. They charge extra for the user to redownload an item you purchased in the future? Does that mean if you download it and it somehow gets corrupted, you can't try again unless you buy the EDS? If so... wow. Just wow.

I bought AC directly from Ubisoft a few years back, and they ended up shuttering their entire store in favor of a new one. They did drop me a note to tell me to download anything that I didn't still have, but it was pretty shitty the way that they changed policy, now if my game installer gets corrupted or lost, I have to either pirate or buy a new copy.

DaoJones: Really don't want to put any negativity on this persons kind gifts but I do find this funny:

"Extended Download Service (details) — $4.99

Simply purchase EDS as part of your order. We’ll automatically store on our server a back-up copy of the software that you purchased and downloaded for two (2) years from the date of purchase."

Is that why GOG games end in .99? A hidden EDS charge! ;)
I think it's ridiculous when places charge that EDS charge. I think it's all the more ludicrous when they offer it on a product that you just enter a key on a trial product and it's all of a sudden a full product. Why would they try to trick people into spending $5 for something that they already get for free? It really bugs me.

At any rate, I have this backed up across a few hard drives in case mine goes bad.

Time to go make a back-up... or two or three.

I refuse to purchase from stores like this. Direct2Drive used to have this policy, so I didn't buy anything from them.

These codes, however, are promotion codes I got with hard drive purchases. I don't have as big a resistance to getting something legitimately free. I haven't bought the last few UBI games specifically because of the draconian DRM they have had.

They are starting to loosen up - well, allegedly as a test. I will continue to bide my time, and if they really do change their tune, then I will go ahead and get the UBI games I've been wanting. I have a huge backlog of games, though, so waiting a year or two doesn't really hurt (it also increases the chances I have a better computer to play the games that I can't max out today).
Aah, darn, I just missed it (stupid Firefox for not loading the page properly). Anyway, congrats, Garugo! :)

You're welcome. I'll post the final one in around 8 hours.
When I tried the code about 3 minutes after it was posted, it said it was invalid. I'm assuming that meant that Garugo got it before I tried it. Or?

Totally understand. Few Ubi games I wanted to check out and their DRM just stops me. Good thing there is GOG and tons of "indies" to take my money. :)
Last code:

Grats to the lucky winners.
