Nnexxus: I guess it will take some time (as in : a few weeks/months) before the community sets up and releases something significant. We're not talking about modding here, but about getting to know the (probably outdated and not really well-documented) source code of an entire game. It's quite some work to wrap your head around it all, and you have to be familiar with most of the code before being able to improve something without breaking everything else.
Patience, young padawan ! But looking at what Freespace has become, I think we can have very high hopes for Arx.

Best you can hope for from current projects is increase in stability, higher resolution support and perhaps features from more modern rendering engines. All this takes time especially considering that currently all announced projects are made by individuals (they seem to be collaborating at least). AFAIK no one has started to assemble proper team to improve Arx yet.
That's good enough for me for the near future, TBH. Fixing bugs left over(still) in the latest release and fixing/implementing proper high resolution support should be priority one for the time being i should think.
