marianne: I live close to a scientology headquarters (sorry to say) and hear so many stories of their evil doings...all true. I read all the posts made here, all are knowledgeable and informative. IMHO scientology is an evil cult that has gotten out of control and cause of its size, it is sometimes referred to as a religion.

I was offered a job teaching there, i do not have a teaching degree and was told that i didn't need one as they would instruct me as to what they wanted taught. That was my clue as to what the job was really all about and i turned down their offer, of course. They also own many of the small businesses in the area. All bought under false names so the public would not know who owned them. Thus I don't shop in that area.

They are extremely adept at mind manipulation, it is a science to them. They are power hungry and dangerous. Some of their wealthy members have secondary homes here, but when the rich and famous arrive, they keep a very secretive and low profile. We never see them. They are growing...beware.
I saw in the documentary I linked that they know how to ''push peoples' buttons''. They're just craving to be above people, IMO and they oppose mind studies because it will revel them to be control freaks.
No, because I'm not a dumbass.

realkman666: No, because I'm not a dumbass.
Sounds basically true.
I don't know how true these articles are (it's never a good idea to rely on a single source), but they reveal some interesting (and horrible) things about Scientology:

http://www.cracked.com/article_20869_5-ways-growing-up-inside-scientology-was-nightmare.html

http://www.cracked.com/article_21115_5-disturbing-things-i-learned-in-scientologys-space-navy.html

If even half of the stuff in those articles is true, then frankly, I'm amazed such an organisation is even allowed to exist.
I'll just leave this here...

Yup...that's how it works.

DieRuhe: Today at the library I almost picked up a copy of Dianetics for twenty-five cents, just to be amused. But I didn't. Now I regret it because I imagine this could have been a lot of fun.

It's important to replay this tense music in your mind as you read:

To get the full experience.
This two things are mostly where my interest begins and ends:

You don't get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, you start a religion.
-Response to a question from the audience during a meeting of the Eastern Science Fiction Association on (7 November 1948

THIS IS WHAT SCIENTOLOGISTS ACTUALLY BELIEVE.

cool, it might be a fun read and it might be a valuable book later on (you never know what will happen with scientology), like mein kampf and stuff like that or the necronomicon.

VABlitz: Another major religion on my extremely wary list: Jehovah's Witness.

Novotnus: One day they came to visit me. So it happened I just had LaVey's bible lying by the door, prepared to be returned to my friend. The conversation went something like this:
JW (after some introduction about general mankind condition) ...but do you really understand the Bible?
Me: This one? (showed them the book I had)
They quickly left and never came back :)
Reminds me of a german comedian who once (10 years ago?) did a gag about greeting Jehova's Witnesses with an "I've been waiting for you" at his door - while wearing coloured contact lenses and having canned pea soup dripping out of his mouth ;)

ps. He's doing comedy in English as well (he accomplished everything in German already, so he started this): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3heSPK6SJsU

pps. Let's turn this into a topic about comedians! We don't even have to change the thread title for this oO

Well, that LaVey's book was a chance one in a million :) But if someone made that sand-up story real, that would be one of the best things ever done :)
