I just don't like them on principle; I'm not going to throw hard-earned money at an unfinished product. If something is as good as they say it is, maybe I'll buy it once it's released. Unless it takes forever, and then I'll probably lose interest (Hello, Folk Tale).

Was about to post something along the same lines.

Edit : but my small adendum would be that, in the end, what's not good for the end user is not good for the market. The lack of knowledge of the product is damaging -> an educated sale is beneficial for everybody.
Yep, that's what happened to me, I pre-ordered a game based on there was no DRM info on it to be had including the Amazon page I bought it from, And when the disc came in the mail I noticed on the back of the DVD style case in nearly illegibly small type something about Steam, one weekend later I was against Steamworks, wary of SquareEnix & haven't preordered a game since I still preorder action figures (especially ones that seem to be scalperbait).

I, personally, don't like pre-orders because you don't know what you'll get.
If the developers don't gather enough money they will realease the game even with bugs. (meaning not tested )
Preorders alone? MAYBE. The jury's out.

Peorders as they're done with exclusive game content? UNDENIABLY YES!
