I've never tried using a 64-bit OS before. I'm thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 x64, but I'm not sure if my CPUs are compatible. One of them is an AMD Athlon 64 X2, the other is an AMD Athlon X3 455. I am assuming that the first should be compatible, but what about the second?

Yes, the Athlon X3 455 is x64 compatible.
You mean the first Athlon generation right? That's quite old. I'm not really sure but you can verify it with CPU-Z. Download it here:
http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.59-setup-en.exe

In the instructions column, see if you have any of these AMD64, x86-x64 or EM64T. If you have any of those instructions, then your processor support x64 architecture.

Yes, both are 64 bit compatible :)
My Athlon II X3 440 worked great with Win7 64 during the beta.
I also suggest you check the computer manufacturers website. Some offer BIOS / driver updates for their existing computers that make them more compatible with Win 7. Especially laptops as they often have special keyboard drivers that need to be updated when Win 7 is installed.
Ah, another sheep came to the altar. Whoops, did I type that out loud?

Thanks for the help, but wormholewizards helped me to ascertain it first. Too bad GOG doesn't let you mark multiple posters as solutions :P
Don't know if it's okay to post in a solved topic but I don't want to create a whole new thread.

Is my CPU compatible with Windows 7 Home Basic x64?

My CPU is:

AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor FD4100WMGUSBX

Here is a link to the product page on Newegg for all additional information: Link

Also, if not which x64 version of Windows would it be compatible with?

I'm not sure, but CPU-Z, which link was provided by wormholewizards, is really helpful. Might want to use that to check ;)

There are ongoing problems with Windows threading and CPU scheduling on Bulldozer processors. They affect the performance of multithreaded applications most strongly, but they also affect the CPU's ability to go into "turbo" mode.

Windows 7 x64 will run OK on Bulldozer, but it defeats some of the new CPUs' most interesting features.

If you have a Bulldozer CPU, you should consider being an early adopter of Windows 8. Windows 8 has been confirmed to use the advanced features of the Bulldozer CPUs and gets significant performance benefits from them.

How would Windows Vista 64x work for me then?

Thank you for the quick and helpful reply!

Avoid Vista at all costs. There are many reasons, but they all boil down to the fact that 7 is better or less bad at everything.
kk cool.

Thank you!
