Delixe: AGP was killed off long before it's time and PCI-e 1.0 wasn't near it's capacity when 2.0 was announced. It's pretty much a con to sell newer motherboards TBH.

Agreed. They're always pushing for the next big thing no matter how pointless it is.

StingingVelvet: I had several games tax my GTX 260 which prevented me from getting smooth frames at max settings, hence the upgrade. A lot it now-a-days is processors though... the games I still have some framerate issues with, like Borderlands or GTA4, are more processor-heavy. I have a Q9550 and need to upgrade to an i7 at some point in the near future.

Never had a problem running Borderlands on a 260. That's with AA forced on too. So yeah, it's probably down to something else.

Borderlands' dynamic shadows make my fps drop from 60 locked to a variable between 20 and 50... it's very annoying. The shadows in that game supposedly run off the processor.
I have a quad, so it surprises me it still hits me that hard, but whatever. I've tried everything with that game to get smooth performance with shadows on and it just doesn't happen.

Have you checked task manager while running the game? Might not be using all four cores. Also if you are not overclocking a little extra speed might help.

Dynamic shadows are still very primitive. Clearly one of the areas in need of the most improvement. For most games like Mass Effect (2) I just turn them off as they make otherwise good graphics just look flat out ugly. I think I kept them on in Borderlands as it was less crap looking.

Well in Borderlands without dynamic shadows there are no shadows at all, sadly.

Hence why I considered it the better option to keep them. But yes, generally they just suck. The biggest mistake of all is using them on character models. That just takes the express train to Uglyville.

Have you tried running Borderlands in DX10 assuming you're on Vista/Win7? It defaults to DX9 but you could apply it by hand in WillowEngine.ini
I noticed an increase in performance when I did this. There are some more variables in there that might help as well.
Since I'm running an inferior quad to yours (9350e) along with an inferior video card and I don't experience similar dips in frames with Max settings @ 1920X1080, this would seem to suggest some kind of problem in relation to the performance dips in Borderlands on your end. I run Borderlands with no AA and 8x AS with hand tweaked variables in config for quality not offered in the game's option menu.

Yeah, I tried all the tricks. Some people have said it's a bug on certain configs, I don't know really... all I know is dynamic shadows kill that game for me.
Sorry to have to contradict other posters, but I just got myself an Asus 480gtx and after 5 minutes of mafia 2 it is running stupidly hot, and sounds like a wind turbine. Maybe it's the Asus model, but I'd advise people to avoid unless you've got some special cooling.
Indidentally, I bought it so that I could run mafia 2, then the card came with a free download key for... Mafia 2. Anyone know if I can give this to someone else, or is it tied to the card?

Well, I have a 280GTX and I am perfectly happy with it, I still have to find a game that might need a replacement of the videocard or the processor... except Oblivion heavily modded, of course ;)
For your question, well, I don't think the download key for Mafia II you got is tied to the card. Everything depends on how it is labelled. Where do you have to input the key? on a website? Directly in the game? Unless they ask you for the precise serial number of your card (which is something I have yet to see), I'd say you're free to do whatever you want with your key.

Mafia 2 is a Steamworks game isn't it? I would assume you can give that key to anyone and they can activate it on Steam. Can't see how it could possibly be tied to the card in anyway. I remember I got a copy of Dirt with my 4850 which only had one activation (gee thanks Codies!) but I can't see how they could do that with a Steamworks game.

Interesting, i've recently checked out Mafia 2 on a 8800 Ultra [AMD X2 3.0 or 3.2GHz, 8800Ultra, with appox 4gigs of 800mhz RAM, if anyone is interested], and the game played smoothly maxed out at 1600x1024. Hell knows why it's overheating, all i've heard about the 480s is that they are loud as an effin. The 460 is much quieter.
You could play Mafia 2 on lower details, there's not really a lot of difference, the resolution mostly blurs that depth of field sh@t. [yeah, i've finished it on 640x480, i know.];)
