For those who don't know what I'm talking about, I mean Composite (Red,White,Yellow), S-Video, Component (Red, Blue, Green) & HDMI.

Okay, here is my question... I know that the order I put them in is from worst to best, but just how much better is S-Video than composite & how much worse is it than component? I don't have a whole lot of experience with S-video & was looking into getting an S-Video hookup for my N64 (speaking of which... http://robertmartyr.deviantart.com/art/Watermelon-N64-307289805) after realizing how insanely expensive component cables are. I am in no way expecting the cable to make the games look like Xbox 360 level or anything... I just want to know if it is even worth investing in the cable. Keep in mind the main thing I am looking for here is improved colors & maybe even slightly better resolution. Thanks =)

First of all, let's differentiate digital (hdmi) from analogic (the rest). with digital signal you'll have the quality your hardware can render. In other words, you won't have any loss in the transmission.

For the analogic ones... I have a Wii hooked to a tube TV (yeah I know, I'm in the XX century yet, but the thing is a Loewe and the quality of image is simply great. And I have other two Full HD TV to compare!) and the default cable is a SCART one with S-Video. So the image quality wasn't great (white text over black was very fuzzy to the extent of being hard to read) and I decided to buy the SCART/components one. The change was... wow. No more fuzzy edges, bleached colours, aberrations...

I can't say anything between Composite and S-Video because I don't have experienced it (as far as I can read, Composite is S-Video but blurrier... eek :P ) but the difference between S-Video and Components is very noticeable.

I appreciate you attempting to help, but I honestly can't understand much of what you are saying. Keep in mind you aren't talking to a very technically minded individual here... the only thing that I have found out that I even remotely understood was that composite sends all of the colors (White, Red & Blue) as a single signal., S-Video sends White separately & the two colors together & Component+ sends them all separately.... or something like that.
S-Video looks better than Composite (RCA). Here's a good site with examples of what a different S-Video makes:

Just be sure the cable is good quality - get official ones, if possible. I spent ages tracking down a decent S-Video cable because most knockoff SNES / N64 ones simply convert the Composite signal to S-Video, making things look like crap.

Of course, Component and HDMI are much better than S-Video, but the N64 doesn't support those natively. S-Video is the best thing available for many older consoles, but you can add Component to many older ones via mods (but they're very expensive.)

I searched for 's-video Dot crawl' on Google. Took me two seconds.

I already knew about your problem because I had to deal with it on my own a couple of years ago. :) Glad to have helped out.
