I concur that Arcanum is an excellent though often neglected game. If you are looking for something more recent in that hard-core style I'd suggest Avadon.

Play the demo, these games are great but not for everyone.
try Avadon: The Black Fortress.

SpirlaStairs: try Avadon: The Black Fortress.
I hate to say it but ive played avadon only to get bored to tears at the mid/late game point. Its really just a bad game. The problem i seem to have with spiderweb is that the geneforge series is my favorite game series of all time. Its horribly imbalanced but I beat the 1st game and it was amazing. Yet after playing it, i find every other game to be a waste of time. Its really just a curse.
Try Fallout 1 and 2....You can't possibly go wrong with those two(the combat is turnbased like ultima so it should be right up your alley and overall games are fantastic).GOG's recent release Nox might be worth a look too but I haven't played that one..

There are some other games that are not rpgs but since you enjoyed tactics then you might want check out jagged alliance 2(the game is superior to tactics IMHO)

If you are looking to try something that is completely different and yet very awesome then you might want to give mount and blade:warband a try....It's a 3rd person game but one of the most addictive medieval age simulators that I have ever played. The most engaging game perhaps since fallout 2....

Shloulet: Really not any particular learning curve for Might and Magic. In several it's very easy to level up, sometimes it's more difficult. I spent a while trying to figure out Might and Magic Book I: secrets of the inner sanctum, but I was able to dive right into Might and Magic VI

The earlier games are generally a little harder, especially one and two. Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra is where everyone recommends you start on the six-pack that GoG offers, but I've found Might and Magic VI is the easiest interface (fully 3d world) and the easiestr of the 3DO games (more flexible skills, more gimmes, as well as a larger game world than the rest of the games 3DO produced).

I don't know how that stacks up against your requirements, but it is a diverse series that's worth exploring.

deathknight1728: Cool, thanks for that bit of help!

One question ive been wondering though, how does your character fight with turnbased combat at once? Do you go through each character and get to see who did what damage or is it all at once? It wasnt really stated but id prefer getting to select each character.
What happens is one character takes a turn, then another character, and so on through the rest of your party, then the monsters. In the first five games, you also have the option to try to flee, which may or may not work; also, all combat is turn-based. In the fully 3D world that 3DO added, you may or may not use turn-based combat. In seven and eight, you get a running turn, but in six you have to turn of turn-based.

Titanium: You can have a look at UnReal World. It looks really basic, but I can guarantee you that it's not. It's a real challenge to survive, and just try to get through winter.

deathknight1728: Id like to play this game, but without a demo and no knowledge of how it is until i buy, im not sure.
You're in luck then. Here's what it says on the site:

UnReal World is a shareware game, which means that you can freely download and play the unregistered trial version to decide whether you like it or not. If you do, you can register (buy) your copy of UrW. This way you will get to play the full version of the game without the limitations of the unregistered version. The process is fast, easy and reliable and the most inexpensive full version registration costs only $3 USD.
