Doom (and the rest) are DRM free on Steam anyway, because of Dosbox and the like. I got them there, then burned them to a disc along with ZDoom. With ZDoom they play perfectly on Windows 7 64bit and are still as fun as the day they came out.
Zdoom, gzdoom or other ports are the way to go as you only need the wadfiles and not the other data crap, also you can reg up the resolution.
To use dosbox isnt really recommanded as you only get low resolution and has a high cpu-usage at the same time.

Deadelvis_37: Yes good point. I downloaded ultimate Doom off Steam but the colour is all screwed up i think because of windows seven. Bummer
Try running the game and the other two(doom 2 final doom etc) in RiSEN3D, a program to run doom in newer OSes with support for and downloads of high res texture and model packs, better sounds, etc. They even have such high res and high quality upgrade pcks on their site with the frontend/engine.

EDIT: Risen3d is also the doom engine/grontend with the most recent work done on it and looks awesome both in classic texture mode and with the updates(except for some of the skybox mod packs which look meh to me)

Rule of thumb on Steam: any game that uses DOSbox is DRM free.

Whiteblade999: Fun fact: All the ID games that use dosbox on steam are DRM-free. Even better is for Heretic, Hexen, Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, Doom, Doom II, Final Doom and Master Levels of Doom all have content files which can be used in source ports which make the game look better, play better (mouselook or jumping in all of the games), and perform better.

Edit: Same aplies to X-com, I'm not sure on any others.
Some of the older LucasArts Star Wars games are also like that, Dark Forces for sure, maybe others as well.
Doom is near! Despair, mortals!
