Whitecroc: Yes, well, I won't be able to afford both either way. And I'd prefer to build for the future.
your kidding right?
Acer G235HAbd $109.99

SAPPHIRE 100314-4SR Radeon HD 6870 Dirt3 Edition $199.99

which is still under $350 even factoring in the 'you don't live in america tax' you should still be able to get something close for 350 sure the 6870 is a little slower than the 560ti or the 6950 but they can still run most games at high-ultra...
I'll bite. What are the qualifications of a good widescreen?

same as others decent contrast ratio I'd definately go for 1920x1080 as a minimum at 19 inch or above, decent refresh rate... DVI is a very nice bonus Displayport even better for futureproofing...

What you'll probably get in your budget is a 19 inch with 1080p a DVI port and 5ms refresh...
How's this for a screen?

If you can't get the gist of the specs, try running the site through Google Translate.

If you're getting a new monitor do yourself a favor and buy a IPS panel (in plane switching), yes they cost more but a few models are really close in price to the (really crappy) TN panel models that you'll probably end up with if you don't select for this feature.

Here's a list with prices:

Even the cheapest IPS panel is his entire budget and though IPS is better a decent TN will still be a thousand times better than the one he's using now...

Yeah, I think it's funny how people spend hundreds of dollars on a high-end video card and then use a low end monitor that is only capable of displaying 1.6% of the colours found in games (i.e. 262k colours out of 16.7 million).

A VA-panel or IPS-panel monitor is a must. Affordable IPS minotors start at around $250 USD. There's no excuse.
I just looked up the specs on the screen. Good grief, it's absolutely horrible. Also, I assumed it was 19'' for some reason. I guess it looked bigger than my old screen.

I'm just glad I didn't buy it. When I took over the apartment I'm living in I figured there was no need to replace the screen.
do not change from 19 inch 4:3 to anything smaller than 22inch 16:9.
because of how screen is measured you will lose some screen real estate. save up money and go either 24 or 26. below that is not worth the money if your current monitor works properly.
Alright, I am gonna go ahead with the 560 Ti, I think. I'm also going to get the screen I linked. Any last opinions?

I would (and did) buy one with two fans just for the peace of mind if nothing else. Different manufacturers produce slightly different versions of the same card, so performance may vary, at least on paper.

The screen should be fine.

wodmarach: Only if it's an OEM edition one reason I was happy when they announced that the EU was getting retail versions for the cheap preorder on 7 was that I could move it with me.
avatar
Whitecroc: Unfortunately that is the case. I'll have to scrounge up some money for when I do make the switch, I guess.

EDIT: I should mention I'm using a 19'' monitor (I think native resolution is 1280*1024ish?). Does it make a difference? They're not cheap to replace, you know.
Due to resolution I suggest a cheaper video card like AMD Radeon HD 6670/6770 or Nvidia Geforce GT 530/545.

Got the GTX 560 Ti, but I'm not getting a signal to the screen. Any idea what's wrong?

did you
ensure the cards fully inserted?
connect both 6 pin adapters to different rails?
checked it with a different card?
I am a dummy. I even have a window! Turns out one of the two power connectors wasn't plugged in properly.

EDIT: What a pain. I was watching a video to check if I had installed it correctly and I noticed they pulled off a plastic film. Who the heck puts a plastic film on a card like that? Now I have to double-check that there isn't one on my new card. Once more unto the breach...
