If you're old enough you should remember the very beginnings of video games and you're probably pretty familiar to text adventure titles. There were many great games in the genre, but if you'd have to choose the best of the best text adventure games we bet Zork series is your pick. And this weekend we're offering you a [url=http://www.gog.com/en/promo/zork_games]flat 40% discount on all Zork games that are available in GOG's catalogue - and that includes the first, text-based only games as well as graphical adventure titles Return to Zork, Zork Nemesis: The Forbidden Lands and Zork: Grand Inquisitor. That's only $3.59 a piece and you get a chance to revise a good portion of adventure games history.

I've been inspired to geek.

My first reaction to this offer was to flash the plastic - again. Then I thought - hey, didn't I have most of these games back "in the day".

So, I fire up WinUAE - which has travelled through at least 3 PC's with me - and have a look at what I had on my old Amiga. Sure enough - there they are - a large collection of Infocom games (20 in all) - all still working.

But, not content with my geekery, I copy the data files across to the PC and find myself a Windows interpreter (Windows Frotz - was the one I found to be the simplest to get going and most consistently handled all the files). I even sourced ports of the graphics and sound files from the few of the games which had those.

So, I have everything in the Anthology plus a whole bunch of other - but was so wrapped up in my geekery that I forgot to buy the rest of the set.

Yeah, WinFrotz is a solid terp. My personal fave, though, is Gargoyle, designed from the ground up to display high-quality text, with hinting, antialiasing and juuuuust-right linespacing. Doesn't work with everything, but the stuff it DOES work with looks fantastic.

Oooh, that is rather nice. Doesn't do the z6 games but I can stick with Windows Frotz for those.

Thanks.

sorry if this is a really stupid question but I am a total idiot when it comes to technical stuff- would I be able to buy the zork games for my iPad? I had them years ago- the graphics games , and would love to be able to play them again. Many thanks in advance.

The problems I see here is, well, they all come down to Apple. Dos emulating software is hunted down and shot as far as they are concerned. If I recall correctly, you'd have to jailbreak your iPad to make DosBox work.
I really should start Necro'ing threads again

Because apparently some people are already stealing my crown...
