Any of you guys using this type of modem ? Is it good ?
I hear all the D-Link products are pretty good.

Yeah Dlink are usually okay , they're a good fallback if you can't get Linksys.
Personally I'd recommend avoiding netgear like the plague and possibly treating any users of netgear equipment like potential plague carriers.
Does it show I've had trouble with supporting netgear equipment recently?
I use an NEC modem, or whatever it is my ISP sends me. Can't you just ask your ISP for a new modem?
and end up with the cheapest shittiest device around, probably locked down like mad too

Locked down modems? People customize their modem these days? They're not routers or anything.

90% of adsl modems have routers built in...

Yes they are. My cable modem is actually a cable modem/router/switch/wireless access point. And it's a Netgear ;-) Well, that's what my ISP gave me. I only started using it last week after my old cable modem gave out. I had it hooked up to my own router/switch/wireless access point, but now I just have everything connected directly to the Netgear, as I don't want to have to deal with two configurations. Fortunately, my ISP unlocks the gear on request, so I control the configuration myself.

My new linksys gets a bit warm, I've been using the attached since it was a bit crap at cooling my laptop, placed between both routers it does the job nicely
