To be fair, I think Sterling makes valid comments. Hiding everything under "he has a good side" is more than a bit lame considering a real murderer would not act that way at all. Either you're a psychopath and don't care for others, or if it's an obsession, guilt eventually turns people into wrecks who are incapable of function in society.
Anyone who understands how people "work" knows that the character they put down is simply not realistic or very unlikely. Unless he's schizophrenic, no person with an emotional and compassionate side can block out "dark thoughts" and pretend they're not there while functioning like a perfect part of society. It would affect you severely - if it didn't, you wouldn't be compassionate.
In the end, I think it was a bit of a cheap move to do what they did, for the sake of a major plat twist. They could have avoided it all by making him schizophrenic and unaware of what his alternate personality did.
