WhoKnowscs: Don't forget . . . now you won't pick your wing-man. Instead you will fly though a mission with 4 other pilots. If one of them happens to be killed then a new ship with a new nameless pilot will warp in from the carrier ship.
To complete a mission successfully you will have ample opportunity to shoot baddies but all you really need to do is fly around for 4-5 minutes without dieing. Your nameless/faceless AI wing-men will complete the mission for you just fine. Although you will have at least 3 points where you must make a kill to progress the plot forward, after all we have to feel involved in the story.
And since we can't be trusted to not shoot our AI wing-men, your guns/lasers/missiles will either lock up and not fire the second they are in the crosshairs(maybe with a no-so-witty retort about watching your fire buddy) or the mission will end with failure when the teammate dies . . . but only from your fire not enemies. Won't it be great? ;)
Why bother? Give the people what they truly want ... another first person shooter! We all know that the space sim genre is dead and that every classic must be remade into the most popular genre of the moment regardless of what it used to be. Just make sure the experience is "visceral".
Aliasalpha: However will they fit a 3 hour campaign, chest high walls and regenerating health into wing commander?
Trivially, since it will be a "awesome, visceral" FPS instead of a "boring thing no one plays anymore" space sim. :)
Just in case: Yes the above is sarcasm. :) While a FPS set in a space-sim's established universe might turn out well, it would be nice to see someone try to reinvigorate the space sim genre with a great AAA title.
If Chris Roberts is making a new AAA space sim, that could be pretty good. I haven't played the Wing Commander series, but I've heard good things and am looking forward to one day trying out WC3. So if true, that would be cool.
