wvpr: Going by everything between WC4 and Starlancer, including the movie, I can't get excited about the possibility of new Wing Commander games. Felt like the vision was no longer there
avatar
real.geizterfahr: True. Prophecy was horrible (it didn't feel like Wing Commander) and the movie was even worse. But there's some hope ;-)
I think Chris Roberts had moved on before Prophecy? He's not on the credits. But after WC4, Starlancer's corniness and gameplay flaws were a big letdown.

Coming to your nearest Steam download server - Wing Commander: Starfox Edition. You'll do a barrel roll.

Aliasalpha: However will they fit a 3 hour campaign, chest high walls and regenerating health into wing commander?

How perfectly ZiPpy of you. ;)

EndlessKnight: Just so long as it's not an MMO or Facebook game...
Great now you've made me think of it as a facebook based mmo!

No! No! Please No! No!! Noooooooooooooooooooo!!
Don't forget . . . now you won't pick your wing-man. Instead you will fly though a mission with 4 other pilots. If one of them happens to be killed then a new ship with a new nameless pilot will warp in from the carrier ship.

To complete a mission successfully you will have ample opportunity to shoot baddies but all you really need to do is fly around for 4-5 minutes without dieing. Your nameless/faceless AI wing-men will complete the mission for you just fine. Although you will have at least 3 points where you must make a kill to progress the plot forward, after all we have to feel involved in the story.

And since we can't be trusted to not shoot our AI wing-men, your guns/lasers/missiles will either lock up and not fire the second they are in the crosshairs(maybe with a no-so-witty retort about watching your fire buddy) or the mission will end with failure when the teammate dies . . . but only from your fire not enemies. Won't it be great? ;)
It will probably be a reboot.

I hope Blair and Angel get a happy ending this time around :)

Why bother? Give the people what they truly want ... another first person shooter! We all know that the space sim genre is dead and that every classic must be remade into the most popular genre of the moment regardless of what it used to be. Just make sure the experience is "visceral".

Trivially, since it will be a "awesome, visceral" FPS instead of a "boring thing no one plays anymore" space sim. :)

Just in case: Yes the above is sarcasm. :) While a FPS set in a space-sim's established universe might turn out well, it would be nice to see someone try to reinvigorate the space sim genre with a great AAA title.

If Chris Roberts is making a new AAA space sim, that could be pretty good. I haven't played the Wing Commander series, but I've heard good things and am looking forward to one day trying out WC3. So if true, that would be cool.

you kidding of course it's going to be an FPS they've done it to every other goddamn game from my youth! -.-

It will be both. And a first person, cover based shooter. That's how these things work.

This would explain the weird actors-list. But, seriously... Mark Hamill is something about 60 years old. He could be the Emperor in a Star Wars-Reboot but not Christopher Blair in a Wing Commander-Reboot. I mean... Just have a look at him.

CR will probably do something like Freelancer, Blair will defenetly have a new VO.

I just hope that I will be able to play another privateer.

What's the last game you saw with live video rather than computer actors? Even if they tried to remake the series, computer actors with voiceover is the only way they could possibly go.
That are great news !!!! Imagine this time instead of being mark hamill, you have him as a sidekick ! Time to dust off the trusty hotas...Really i wished for something like this for years but i don't really know if they can pull it off. There are many many space simulations released the past few years....and basically anything after Freespace 2 and Earth and Beyond suck bit itme....YESSSS the Open Freespace 2 project is incredible and they even made using the open source engine some really interesting star trek/babylon 5 and ...even starfox games...and Freelancer had a great plot but...that'all...Independence war 1/2,dark horizon, starshatter the gathering storm,x1/x2/x3 ,roque universe etc...while not bad games they lucked the grand "space opera" feel.I mean they had great graphics but...you only saw your character through some portraits or basically your ship is your character....The wind commander games ,as freelancer and freespace 2 has a great story with characters you cared about and that is what made them so great...

so full steam ahead for Wind Commander VI The price of a decent game ?
