The Coen bros. are my all-time favorite filmmakers, so I'm coming in to this discussion with a major bias. I also love Charles Portis, so "True Grit" is win-win.
No one has mentioned "Miller's Crossing" yet, so I thought I'd throw that one out there. It's my favorite movie--such a well-written film and intricate plot. I'm a big Dashiell Hammett fan, as well, so "Miller's Crossing" hit my sweet spot. I believe that the Coen bros. are about the most consistently great literary adaptationers (that might not be a word) in Hollywood history: m's crossing, o brother, no country, and now a good-looking true grit.
Forgive me for gushing. I'm finished now.
