Hi, I am looking for a game like total war. But only in 2D. Somehow I hate modern games. and love 2D war games. Also, please no economy just straight up recruitment and war. I buy like one game a week off gog. But would love to see armies clash in 2D battle. But no economy. Total war looks good but prefer in 2D.
Starcraft 2
Warcraft 3
Ground Control 2
Can't really think of anything else right now... Not sure those are proper 2d games.
You should look into Paradox's catalogue. Especially that on Gamersgate as it's on sale right now. But there's some very 2D grand strategy games there for not much cash at all.

Fields of Glory (antiquity and middle ages )
Age of rifles (XIXth century)
Steel Panthers I & II (WW2 to modern era )

I love these games, but I think the OP is after something a little less hardcore. The economy aspect of the Paradox games is quite prominent (especially Vicky 2).

How about the Cossacks games if they are available? I think Steam does Cossacks: Back to War for a couple of quid.

Paradox produce and publish loads of different strategy games. True, "Paradox game" does tend to immediately conjure up a very specific kind of game, but they're not quite as singular focussed as they first seem.

In any case, the Gamersgate sale should have something to his taste - if anywhere does.
If only GoG had offered Dark Omen the answer would've been obvious.

Very true, I keep forgetting how quickly they've branched out over the last couple of years. And Gamersgate would also be my portal of choice.

When it comes to rights of sale, that game is one seriously lost cause. Plus, isn't it 3D anyway?

I just recently grabbed the Paradox pack and I'm just starting to get an idea of what's on offer myself (especially seeing as I've got bloody flu - nothing ruins the tactical mind like the lurgy).

those are all fully 3d actually. think age of empires 1 and 2, or warcraft 1 and 2 -- those are 2d rts
