Navagon: You should look into Paradox's catalogue. Especially that on Gamersgate as it's on sale right now. But there's some very 2D grand strategy games there for not much cash at all.

Lobsang1979: I love these games, but I think the OP is after something a little less hardcore. The economy aspect of the Paradox games is quite prominent (especially Vicky 2).

How about the Cossacks games if they are available? I think Steam does Cossacks: Back to War for a couple of quid.

Navagon: Paradox produce and publish loads of different strategy games. True, "Paradox game" does tend to immediately conjure up a very specific kind of game, but they're not quite as singular focussed as they first seem.

In any case, the Gamersgate sale should have something to his taste - if anywhere does.

Lobsang1979: Very true, I keep forgetting how quickly they've branched out over the last couple of years. And Gamersgate would also be my portal of choice.
