IMO it could be another cooler in the system that is leading to the temp problems......is the Power Supply vents cleaned out(the fan AND the holes on the bottom/sides of the PSU both clean?)?

Also, what about the case main fan? And the cpu heatsink/fan? Both cleaned out good?
Also whats the system's environment like? Is it cluttered inside or out? Cables are a leading cause of extra heat but no way should anything other than a fire get the bastard that hot

Does your motherboard have a second PCIe x16 slot? Maybe if you moved it lower you might get it away from the other hotter components. Who knows, it might be peer pressure, your GPU has fallen in with a bad crowd

I had the same issue long ago and my GPU was heating up to 90=100 celsius...even a PCI slot cooler pointed at the video card only cooled it down by 15 degrees or so. Cleaning out the CPU heatsink/fan and case fan, along with the PSU fan and exhaust(holes on it on the bottom or sides) lowered it back to normal.

Its got a reasonable amount of space around it, (8-12inches except the back that has around 6inches) as for the inside of my pc its lovely and clean cables arnt an issue, ill upload a pick when I find the cable.

Edit noticed from the photo there is a bit of dust on the CPU heatsink

Photo uploaded isnt great cause i did it from a 3 mega pixel camera

Is the fan going bad on the gpu? That could be the problem.....even with a cooler next to it.

I updated the earlier post.

As for the GPU fan, my very technical way of testing it says its fine (ok i stuck my finger in the fan not sure how else to test it)

my old card had the fan working fine one minute then slowing down and slowly dying the next until the fan just died....it read 0 rpm constantly on a fan speed check(I used ati tune but there are other hardware/vid card checkup and diagnostic tools out there.)

After reading your comment I did a search in it an ive got ati tune (thats what calls itself anyway) and ill keep an eye on it.
I own the Sapphire HD5770 1GB and i love it, once i get my $$ in order im buying one more. Sofar ive nad no issues with it, and can play G4 and other big graphics games with out turning down much at all.. im running a 64bit 2g ram 2.6 DuoCore ATX system that runs nice and cool.

My next upgrade will be to double my ram and run that card in crossfire mode.
